Great Rollright Village Hall Trustees

I am sure most of you at some time will have attended events at the village hall and will agree that it is a valuable asset. It is the only community facility in the village and as such warrants being protected for the future of the village. To keep it running and well managed there is a small team of Trustees that meet monthly.

2025 is going to be an exciting year for the village hall as we have started working on how to improve the hall and expand what the hall can offer to the village residents and beyond. The work we do is rewarding, and we are now looking for2 additional trustees to join the team to help with a range of activities plus the thinking that goes into the events across the year and the overall improvement of this great facility.

If you are living in the village, think you might like to become a trustee and would like some further information about the work we are doing, please contact Trevor.

The Ladies’ Night planned for 18th January has been cancelled.
An evening with local resident Mike Napier - 'Confessions of an airline pilot.'
'Monday 20th January, doors open at 7pm, aim to start at 7.30pm.The WI are hosting Mike Napier - Confessions of an airline pilot.
Mike Napier spent 21 years as an airline pilot flying both long-haul routes across the globe and short-haul routes around Europe. This evening will be a light-hearted canter through all those questions that you have always wondered about as you sit in row 34 on your way to Mallorca, but never dared to ask. How many elephants does an aeroplane weigh? Who are the pilots, what do they do and why do they do it? What about the cabin crew – who are they? And what do passengers get up to? Why flying the simulator is not fun and why pilots don’t let the aeroplanes land themselves! Why turbulence and crosswinds are not frightening – they are just very irritating. And why when your flight gets delayed, do the pilots still make you board on time? Finally, some helpful top tips on where you should go on your summer hols.
Everyone is welcome to join us for Mike's talk and refreshments. The cost for visitors is £3.
So we can cater the refreshments please let us know you are coming along via email to:greatrollrightwi@oxfordshirewi.co.uk by 16th January.

I’m not sure if people are aware but there has been a fabulous mum and baby/toddler group running in the village hall on Tuesdays for a long time. The latest organiser (Jen Stobbart) cannot run it anymore and we have decided to try to keep it going on a rota so that it is less pressure for any one mum alone. Saying that, it still requires the laying out of a lot of toys from the back room, tables, washing up some Toddler plates after snack, sweeping up afterwards and packing all the toys away. This is difficult for Mums with small children (myself included – I have an 18 month old). We are really keen to keep the group going as it is extremely popular but I wanted to ask on the bulletin if there might be any local volunteers who could lend a hand to get toys out of the cupboard around 9:30 till 10 am on a Tuesday morning and / or pack them away again between 11:30 and 12?

Please contact me on 07888 651269.

Council reaches out to households at risk of financial hardship to offer support

Council reaches out to households at risk of financial hardship to offer support Download In a drive to support at-risk households across West Oxfordshire, West Oxfordshire District Council has launched a project using the Low-Income Family Tracker (LIFT) to identify households eligible for vital financial assistance and encourage them to claim it. The initiative has already reached 233 households, urging eligible residents to apply for Pension Credit, which can unlock additional financial support.

LIFT is a data analytics tool that enables the Council to identify households at-risk of financial hardship that may not be claiming the support they are entitled to. By analysing both local authority and publicly available datasets, LIFT helps the Council target those most impacted by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and the lingering effects of the pandemic.

Cllr Rachel Crouch, Executive Member for Stronger Healthy Communities, said, "We’re using LIFT to help us identify vulnerable households that might be unaware of the support available to them.

“The pandemic, followed by the rising cost of living, has created significant financial pressure for many, and recent changes to Winter Fuel Payment criteria have made it more important than ever for eligible residents to claim Pension Credit.

“LIFT has been an invaluable tool in helping us identify those residents who may otherwise be difficult to reach. However, we recognise that there may be more people who are entitled to support but aren’t included in our data. I urge anyone who thinks they or someone they know may be eligible for Pension Credit to check their eligibility and apply before 21 December.”

Recent changes to the Winter Fuel Payment criteria mean that only those in receipt of Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits will now qualify for the payment. However, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates that around 880,000 households are eligible for Pension Credit but are not currently claiming it. To address this, a national Pension Credit awareness drive was launched in August, encouraging eligible households to apply for Pension Credit by 21 December 2024, enabling them to receive backdated payments and qualify for this winter's fuel support.

The project is part of the Council’s wider work to support residents facing financial hardship and ensure they claim the support they are entitled to, including the continuing Household Support Fund. The next phase will focus on helping households make the most out of their income, with the Council to continue to use LIFT to identify residents eligible for other forms of financial support and reaching out to them to make them aware.

If you think you may be eligible for Pension Credit and have not been contacted by the Council, please check your eligibility at https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility or call the pension credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 OR Age UK Oxfordshire on 0345 450 1276.

Please could we appeal to the householder in the bottom half of the Old Forge Road area, whose oil fired central heating system has, and is, causing a major problem for the rest of the residents is this part of the village - for about a month now, the air is full of foul smelling fumes, which even get into your home if you open a door or leave a window open. Please could who ever is responsible for this, get their system sorted, preferably sooner rather than later, as it is very unpleasant.

Thank you.

On Friday, November 22nd, Gavin Southwell and I will be in the Village Hall to answer your questions and discuss any aspect of the Great Rollright Charities that you might be interested in.

This is not a formal meeting but just a drop in session. We want everyone in the village to know as much as possible about the Charity and the role it can play. We can give you information, take a grant application from you or discuss a possible grant.

Maybe, there’s someone in the village that you know of who could benefit from a grant - come and see us.

We’ll just be there for an hour, 6-7pm in the small committee room at the back.

Here’s a thought. The Village Bulletin is making it too easy for the couriers - it’s letting the company and the courier off the hook. Parcels go missing - I send out a Bulletin and we sort it amongst ourselves but it shouldn’t happen like that. Couriers don’t care where they drop parcels because the company doesn’t hold them accountable - the company probably doesn’t even know. What if, when a parcel goes missing, we inform the courier company and complain. If they kept receiving complaints, I think the company would soon take some action and make the couriers accountable for where parcels are dropped.

I’m still happy to send out the Bulletins but we could also complain to the courier company. At least they’d know the extent to which it happens. If we didn’t have the Bulletin, it would be really difficult to sort it amongst ourselves.
sorry - the last Bulletin dropped the poster.

West Oxfordshire District Council News 14 Oct 2024

Residents asked to become superheroes and rescue recyclable items from bins this Recycle Week

Residents asked to become superheroes and rescue recyclable items from bins this Recycle Week Download To tie in with the 'Rescue Me' theme for this year's Recycle Week (14 - 20 October) West Oxfordshire District Council is asking residents if they can save just one more recyclable item from their rubbish bins. Whether it’s an empty shampoo bottle that’s gone into the bathroom bin and is destined for general waste, or a foil takeaway container that no one wants to wash up, if everyone in the district saved just one more recyclable item a week from the rubbish bin it would add up to almost 6 million items over the course of a year.

West Oxfordshire’s recycling rates are among the best in the country and the Council currently sits at position 20 of 343 local authorities in the recycling league table for England, with residents sending most of their waste for reusing, recycling or composting. But recent analysis of waste bins in West Oxfordshire showed that 43% of their contents could have been recycled at the kerbside.

Giles Hughes, Chief Executive of West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “The analysis we recently carried out showed that recyclable items are still making up a considerable amount of the waste that goes into our rubbish bins. By weight, paper accounts for 9% of the average bin’s contents, card 4%, textiles 4% and metal 2.5%.

"However, the material most unnecessarily condemned to the rubbish bin is food waste, accounting for a massive 25% of the contents of the district's bins by weight. Just 11% of this is what we class as 'unavoidable' waste, such as peelings and eggshells, while the rest is wasted food, half of which is still in its original packaging. If this food was placed into caddies and left at the kerbside, it would be taken to the Severn Trent anaerobic digestion facility and used to generate electricity and produce bio-fertiliser to help grow more food.

“We all lead busy lives, and it can be hard to predict how much food we will need each week, but it’s important we all try not to waste food. It’s estimated that around 6-8% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced if we stopped throwing away food.

“The data is showing that although we are doing really well with our recycling in the district, we need to be recycling even more of the right things. This Recycle Week and beyond we encourage residents to rescue at least one more recyclable item from their bins, particularly food.”

Using recycled materials to make new products can use up to 95% less energy than making them from scratch and saves the damage caused to communities and land in the sourcing of new raw materials. While a comparatively small amount of metal goes into the district’s bins, steel cans and aluminium foil are endlessly recyclable with no loss of quality, which makes them an exceptionally valuable resource.

Now in its 21st year, Recycle Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of recycling and shines a light on the nation’s recycling habits.

To mark the week, Oxfordshire County Council is running a design activity and prize draw for residents. To take part, entrants need to design a recycling superhero character to rescue recyclable items from the rubbish bin. Fifty entrants will be selected at random to receive an ‘Oxfordshire Reuses’ aluminium water bottle and other waste reducing goodies. Entry forms can be picked up from any Oxfordshire Library or further details can be found at: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/environment-and-planning/waste-and-recycling/oxfordshire-recycles/recycle-week-2024

Householders who are unsure what they can put into their blue-lidded recycling bin can visit the Council’s webpages to find out more: https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/what-to-put-in-your-bin/

For anything that can’t be recycled at the kerbside, the Oxfordshire Waste Wizard online tool signposts residents to the most sustainable way to reduce, reuse or recycle their unwanted items. Find the Waste Wizard: https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/wastewizard

Air quality in West Oxfordshire continues to improve

Air quality in West Oxfordshire continues to improve Download Air quality in West Oxfordshire has improved significantly since 2005 when Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) were declared for Witney and Chipping Norton. The nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in all monitored areas are now below the national objective levels and showing around a 50% reduction.

The Council has now approved a new Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) which sets out current and future measures to be put in place by West Oxfordshire District Council and our air quality partners, to further reduce NO2 and other damaging particulates to acceptable levels.

Lidia Arciszewska, Executive Member for Environment said, “It’s good news for communities to know that air quality is improving, but there is still more to do. We continue to be committed to reducing the exposure of residents to poor air quality.

“We will soon publish our new AQAP that sets out plans to improve access to walking, cycling and public transport in Witney and Chipping Norton, where NO2 concentrations have been historically high. These interventions will help to maintain acceptable NO2 levels and improve health in our communities.

“We are also investigating installing fine particulate matter sensors in known hotspots in the district to monitor other damaging particles in the air. These sensors will detect pollutants that are smaller than a red blood cell and will enable us to consider how we could further improve our air quality which will ultimately help improve people’s health.”

Air pollution is associated with several adverse health impacts. It is recognised as a contributing factor in the onset of heart disease and cancer. Additionally, air pollution particularly affects the most vulnerable in society: children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions. There is also often a strong correlation with equality issues because areas with poor air quality are also often the less affluent areas.

Fine particulate matter is becoming increasingly associated with respiratory and cardiovascular health conditions as well as other heath conditions such as cancer and dementia. Monitoring these particulates will enable the council to identify any areas of concern and then plan to improve them.

The high levels of NO2 recorded in 2005 were attributed to similar issues in both Witney and Chipping Norton, namely traffic congestion and ‘street canyons’, where continuous buildings either side of a road trap air pollutants causing them to build up.

The Covid pandemic saw concentrations of NO2 fall significantly across the UK, following the sharp decrease in vehicle usage. Since the removal of all restrictions towards the end of 2021, there has been a slight increase in NO2 concentrations across the district, but these have never returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Predictions based on raw 2024 data collected to date, suggests the annual average NO2 concentration for the current year will be lower than 2023, continuing the trend of improvement. If this is proven to be the case, it is likely Defra will expect to revoke the AQMAs in 2025 or 2026. Revocation of an AQMA is expected when concentrations of NO2 have been at acceptable levels for three consecutive years.

The continuing downward trend in NO2 concentrations we are seeing across the district, is thought to be due to a combination of factors, including the continuing popularity of working from home and an increase in uptake of low emission and ultra-low emission vehicles.

A message from Christopher Turner

The weather has been so unpredictable that I left it till this morning to decide if i was to “ride and stride”. It turned out to be lovely, so I repeated what I did last year and had done with Lucia in the past - walk twice round the village via the church and the fair. Sponsorships will be welcome, either to me or to one of the Churchwardens (Gavin Southwell and Mike Napier). Many thanks. Half the money goes to the Oxford Historic Churches Trust and half through the Trust to St.Andrew’s Church.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Great Rollright Autumn Fair this Saturday, 11am-3pm!

It's a lovely community event and the perfect opportunity to catch up with fellow Rollrighteans.

Come and view our impressive collection of classic and quirky cars, enjoy some refreshments from our bar, grab lunch from the Love Pizza van, try your luck on the raffle and tombolas, and browse our market stalls.

Bring your four legged friends to join in the fun - who knows, they might pick up the Best in Show Rosette at our Dog Show! You are welcome to sign up on the day from 11am (the entry fee is £2 per dog/per class).

There'll be games a-plenty and prizes galore, plus bouncy castles, nerf shoot out, pony rides, tuck shop, face paint and hair braiding to keep the children busy. We'll also find out the winner of the Lego building competition and enjoy a display of their models.

All money raised will go to our wonderful school, enhancing the experience of all Great Rollright pupils.

Thanks as always for your continued support. Rollright is a wonderful village!

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, from Kate and the Friends of Great Rollright team X

Second-hand clothing is back in fashion this September

Second-hand clothing is back in fashion this September Download A national campaign encouraging people to shop for clothing second-hand and to donate anything they no longer wear is being supported by West Oxfordshire District Council this month.

Second Hand September highlights the environmental damage caused by textile production - a highly intensive process which often relies on pesticides, toxic chemicals and vast amounts of water.

In the UK approximately 350,000 tonnes of clothing is binned each year rather than being passed on or recycled, wasting valuable resources and further adding to the negative impact that textiles have on the environment.

This Second Hand September, the Council is joining others to encourage people to shop second-hand where possible and make sure old clothing is reused or recycled.

If anyone has clothes that aren’t good enough to pass on, the message is not to put them in the rubbish bin. Clothing, shoes, slippers, blankets, towels, bedsheets and curtains can all be recycled at the kerbside. Residents simply need to leave them out for collection next to their recycling wheelie bin in a tied carrier bag to keep them dry.

All of Oxfordshire’s Household Recycling Centres also accept textiles, and there are charity recycling banks for clothing and textiles in the district. Nearly all textiles can be reused, either being repurposed as clothing or as secondary raw materials for the car, building and textile industries.

Lidia Arciszewska, Executive Member for Environment at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “Second Hand September is a great reminder of the ways we can enjoy fashion without it having a huge negative cost to our planet, for example by buying second-hand or swapping clothes with friends.

“The good news is that two-thirds of people in the UK say they have bought second-hand clothing and the vintage market is booming, particularly among young people. By 2032, it’s predicted that sales in the second-hand clothing market could overtake those of fast fashion.

“We hope that lots of people will be inspired to think second-hand this September and beyond.”

Climate Action Oxfordshire is a partnership between Oxfordshire County Council and the five district authorities, including West Oxfordshire District Council.

The Climate Action Oxfordshire website (www.climateactionoxfordshire.org.uk ) contains guides on shopping more sustainably, looking after clothes so they last longer and how to buy the best quality second-hand clothes.

Throughout the month, West Oxfordshire District Council will be sharing information on its social media channels and highlighting the work of repair cafes in the district, many of which have volunteers available to fix broken zips and carry out other clothing repairs and alterations to give clothing a new lease of life in return for a small donation.

The Second Hand September awareness month was initiated by Oxfam in 2019.

Neighbourhood Alert Logo The Police Message Type Icon THEFT OF MOTOR VEHCLES
We are continuing to have instances of cars being stolen from just outside houses, this normally involves keyless cars and normally happens overnight however in some cases this has happened in the middle of the day when no-one expects it.
There is an easy way to protect against this theft and it involves getting a storage pouch/box for your keys which blocks the signal being stolen, the thieves steal your keys signal from outside your house and then use the signal to steal your car. They will also de-activate any tracking signals from the vehicles as they are very organised and professionals who know what they are doing.
We are advising people to purchase a RFID key fob pouch or box as it is a simple thing that can stop the theft of your keyless car. If you want to know more please use the link below. Executive Back on Tour in Chipping Norton

Executive Back on Tour in Chipping Norton Download West Oxfordshire District Council’s Executive is on tour again next month as they take their 11 September Executive meeting to the Upper Hall at the Town Hall in Chipping Norton

Executive meetings, where key council decisions are made, will continue to tour across the district in 2024 to make it easier for people to take part in local democracy and have their say.

Executive on Tour has been improved for this year with more opportunities added for residents to work directly with the council leadership on locally important topics. These sessions will be run by specialists from the council and will ask residents to help input into key decisions. At Chipping Norton the topic of this engagement will Local Markets.

Councillor Andy Graham, Leader of the Council said, “We are really pleased with the response following our previous Executive on Tour meetings which saw good attendance and it was fantastic to see people coming to our meetings who don’t usually attend.

“We want the council decision making process to be open, transparent, and easy for local people to get involved with.

“We are trialling different times for our meetings in future, which we hope will make it easier for working people to become involved.

“I encourage local people to come along, and we look forward to talking to people about what matters to them.

The new engagement sessions we have added this year will enable us to work directly with residents on key projects. For our Chipping Norton meeting, we’ll be discussing our local markets, general economic development, and how we can invest and support our markets and their valuable contribution to local communities. So why not pop along and take part? Remember, this is your Council.”

The meetings will be held in towns across the district over the coming months with details to be published on the Council’s website as venues are confirmed closer to each meeting. The details for September's meeting are:

* 11 September 2024, Chipping Norton Town Hall, 2.30pm

This meeting’s Engagement Session will be Local Markets in West Oxfordshire and the session will start at 3.30pm

All meetings will be open for residents to attend without pre-booking. After the meeting, everyone is welcome to chat to our Executive members directly.

Each meeting has a standing agenda item for public participation, where residents can raise topics important to them. Members of the public wishing to ask a question at the meetings must notify the Council by emailing democratic.services@westoxon.gov.uk by 2.00pm on the Friday directly before the meeting. More information is available on the Council's website.

Residents' views sought on open air markets

Residents, businesses, and stall holders in West Oxfordshire are invited to help shape the open-air markets in Chipping Norton and Witney to increase footfall, boost prosperity and enhance the visitor experience.

Cllr Duncan Enright, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Economic Development, said:

“Our markets are what make our towns special: the clue is in the ‘market towns’ name. We value our existing stallholders very highly and want to support them and new traders to make the markets bigger, better and more successful.

“We have a real opportunity to improve the experience and perception of our markets for residents and visitors. With funding from the Government, we can invest in our open markets and improve the town centre’s retail and service sector.

“Our aim is to commission a commercial market operator to run the weekly retail markets in Witney and Chipping Norton to drive forward improvements to both markets. But we need first to understand the public’s perception of the current markets in the two locations and what they believe will make the make the markets the best they can be. I urge everyone to get involved in our short survey on the markets; only then can we start to implement the improvements you want to see.

"We know that residents value special events like the Christmas Market in Witney last year, and this was reflected in the footfall figures. Our mission is to create a programme of themed markets at Marriotts Walk that complements the offerings of the retail markets, providing residents with a diverse and vibrant shopping experience. This is a collaborative process and so working together with town partnerships and existing stallholders will be crucial to achieving a shared vision.”

The vision for West Oxfordshire, as laid out in the 2023-2027 Council plan, is to build a district with thriving local economies and vibrant town centres. The Council recognises the crucial role its outdoor markets play in this and hopes that by improving its markets and attracting more visitors, it will boost financial growth for town centres, create more job opportunities, and ensure stronger, happier communities.

To take part in the survey please go to https://yourvoice.westoxon.gov.uk/en-GB/projects/west-oxfordshire-markets. Your responses will help us understand how we can better serve the community and make the markets an even more enjoyable place to visit.

Neal’s ashes will be laid to rest at 3pm this coming Wednesday, at St Andrews. Anyone who wishes to come will be welcome.
There is a man going around knocking on doors and flashing a badge with the word “police” on it. He’s claiming there’s been a burglary nearby and he wants to sell you a burglar alarm. If he comes to your door do not let him in, do not buy from him,

Try to get a registration, make of vehicle and a description and please report to police.
Governor Vacancy - Great Rollright CE Primary School

We are looking for Governors to join our team. We have particular need for a Governor who will oversee the premises and buildings of the school, but any interest is welcomed Governors oversee the workings of the school, no one governor is expected to know it all! The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out duties amongst its members and be able to take decisions as a group. We need self-motivated, determined and enthusiastic individuals who are willing to learn. The rest will be learnt through the full induction and training we offer to help build your understanding and support your development as a governor.

We currently meet 6 times per year. For more information, or if you have any questions at all, please contact Helen Hare (Chair of Governors) on hhar0292@great-rollright.oxon.sch.uk

We are sure that the serial numbers we have been using for the Bulletins are not of interest to anyone except Trevor - so they are gone for good…..
Monday at 7pm at the Village Hall is the A.G.M. of the Trustees of Rollright Village Hall, this will be followed by the A.G.M. of the Parish Council at approximately 7.30pm.

All residents are very welcome to attend both to hear about last year’s events/progress and to learn about the latest developments.

Hopefully both our County and District Councillors will be in attendance.

On behalf of Kath Hales’ sons (her “boys”) and her wider family.

We would just like to thank all those that attended mum’s funeral on Tuesday 7th May. Mum would have been so pleased with the service at St Andrews and delighted, if not very surprised, to see so many make the effort to pay their respects. As her family, it was wonderful to see the church so full and to meet many of you after, finally putting faces to the names she has so often and so warmly spoken about.

As a family we take comfort from the many friends mum made over her 32 years living in Great Rollright and we thank you for the many cards, notes and messages we have received recently.

Finally, to those that donated at the church, a special thank you. Mum had a special place in her heart for both St Andrews and the village school and was keen that this money be split between them, and we will ensure that this is arranged in the coming weeks.

Thank you all for your support and kindness.

Graham, Chris and Phil Hales.
The Plight of Tenant Farmer William Fletcher

The impact of the great depression in British agriculture in the 1870s and 1880s has all but been forgotten. It impacted our whole society: the population of Great Rollright declined by 30%! It destroyed many livelihoods.

The tenant farmers, like William Fletcher – shepherd Richard Widdows' employer – were particularly affected.

William Fletcher was a tenant of Brasenose College and lived in Manor Court Farm in Tyte End in Great Rollright.

Kath’s funeral will take place at 10.30, next Tuesday 7th May at St. Andrew’s Church Great Rollright.

Everyone is welcome and also to then attend a short service at North Oxfordshire Crematorium and Memorial Park in Tackley, near Kidlington (OX5 3EP)

At 12.30 the family will gather at the Cotswold Hotel, Spa & Golf Course, Southcombe, Chipping Norton (OX7 5QH) Again everyone is welcome to come to remember Kath and support the family.

Family flowers are preferred, however, donations in lieu will be gratefully received and will be equally divided, going to Great Rollright School and the Village Hall, both places which held a special place in Kath’s heart.
Yet again, the large rubbish bin at the village hall has been used (by persons unknown) to almost fill it with their own black bin bags.

It is for use of the village hall users ONLY.
There is a mystery car parked: in Tyte End, almost outside Tyte Tap House.

It is half on the pavement and has been there for many weeks now.

It is a black Nissan QashQai +2 registration YF11BFL. The police have run the number on their computer and it is “not of interest to them”. It appears to be taxed until April 2025 with MOT until Sept 2024.

A bit of a mystery. Does anyone knows whose it is and why it has been parked in Tyte End for weeks?

Photographic Enterprise - Frank Packer 🎞️📸

We only know what shepherd Richard Widdows looked like because of Chipping Norton photographers Frank Packer and Percy Simms. Frank Packer and his family ran an enterprising photographic business from the early 1900s until the 1970s. Read the fascinating story of their lives. The highlight is the wonderful selection of photos from the Packer Collection in the Oxford History Centre’s archives.

The mystery of the shepherd’s missing son 👨‍🌾

This morning’s post explores what happened to John Withers, the shepherd’s eldest sons. It reveals a route that thousands of Oxfordshire agricultural labourers took to escape the poverty of rural life in the 1870s.

Hello from Great Rollright WI!

Following our AGM on Monday we are delighted that Martene, Heather K, Irene and Marilina have agree to continue as the committee to keep our vibrant WI going.

Once the 'official' business was closed we heard about a former village resident Mary Cherry - who grew up in Barford St Michael and went onto to become one of the worlds most trusted female agricultural journalists and the first female president of Oxfam. Mary settled in Cotswold Corner in Great Rollright in her final years and became good friends with many in the village. We know of only 2 copies of her book locally 'So I kept going' which we are all now eager to read so we will need to pass it round and share. (We cannot find it via the internet yet)

We are looking to grow our WI membership with those women who live locally plus their family and friends so whether you’re passionate about community service, learning, or simply connecting with other women, the WI provides a supportive and empowering environment!

Our programme for 2024 is attached, we welcome visitors to our meetings so please come along if you see a topic you like!

We meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7.30pm in the village hall. Doors open from 7pm. Sandwiches, cake and refreshments included.

Visitor fee is £2 per meeting. (The fee may vary if a craft event)

Come and join us !

Lamb-tail pie and other farmhouse fare 🥧 🐏

This week's A Shepherd's Stone Substack post is inspired by a copy of Farmhouse Fare that Brenda Hayden discovered in a drawer in her farmhouse in Great Rollright. It focuses on what farmers and agricultural workers would have eaten in the 19th century. It also features a recipe for Lamb-Tail Pie!

With thanks to Brenda.

Super Saturday March 16 In the Village Hall.

Well, after a fantastic weekend of rugby last weekend, we are now reaching the end of the tournament – three matches on one day!

If you didn’t watch here are the answers to the questions we posed last week:-

Yes – Italy did beat Scotland (in Rome), winning 31 to 29

Yes – England did beat Ireland (at Twickenham), 23 to 22

No – Wales did not manage to beat the French, losing 24 to 45, even with the home advantage.

Super Saturday Schedule

14.15 - Wales vs Italy

16.45 – Ireland vs Scotland

20.00 – France vs England

By popular demand we once again have the steak and ale pasties from Hook Norton brewery and our usual range of liquid refreshments.

Being our last weekend we will not have surplus F&B, so to be sure, if you want to ‘partake’, please let us know you are coming.

See you Saturday, we hope.

The Great Rollright Historian: Reginald Welbury Jeffery

📚

This morning’s A Shepherd’s Stone post is another tragic tale!

It is about Jeffery and his wife Ursula and daughter Honor, who lived in Church End House. Jeffery was the author of the first history of the village. They are buried in St Andrew’s churchyard.

With thanks to Carol Dingle whose book inspired this post. She also supplied the wonderful photos that Brasenose didn’t know they had!

Sat Mar 9th

14.15h - Italy vs Scotland

16.45 - England vs Ireland

Sun Mar 10th

15.00h - Wales vs France

Each match has an intriguing agenda:-

Can Italy, who nearly beat France humble the mighty Scots, who have just humbled England?

Can England restore some pride in English rugby by beating the rampaging Irish?

Can Wales get their first win of the series and compound the woes of the French?

Please let us know if you're going to come

Lambing the 19th-century way. Spring time in Great Rollright! 🐑🌼

Today's A Shepherd’s Stone blog post was a great excuse to visit the Cotswold Farm Park and to walk up the road and look at our local lambs.

Does anyone know if the sheep up by The Triangle are Oxford Down?

The history only came together with the help of the Oxford Down Sheep Breeders’ Association.

A message from Sharon Truelove

Just wanted to pass on this warning re a scam – I just got a pleasant, authentic sounding call from ‘Visa’ saying a £900 transaction for on line shopping was in process and press 1 for…. And 2 for ….’

Naturally I put the phone down and then checked my internet banking and nothing.

Julian did some poking around on line and found this article:

so worth a look and warn others.

Hi all

As the U12's Head Coach at Chipping Norton Rugby Club, I and Adam Buxton are organising a rugby tour for around 18 of our boys this Spring. We will be joining the Tigers Challenge event at Minehead over the May Bank Holiday. This will be the boys' very first tour (having been together since the age of 6) and we want to make it special and memorable. But we also want to enable some of our group to join the tour for whom the cost of travel and accommodation may be prohibitive. Four boys currently living in Rollright will be going (Finlay Midwood, Percy Buxton and Harry and Freddie Longsdon).

We would like to appeal to your generosity and/or networks to help us raise the money we need to make the tour happen in the way we want to.

Adam and I are deep into planning at the moment and have already done quite a bit behind the scenes - including starting the fundraising journey!

We have created a JustGiving page and have already raised an impressive £2,841. But we want to raise a total of £5,000 if we can to make sure we can give those who are going a tour to remember and, if we get close to this target, a benefit that rolls out to the wider club. The more we raise, the more we can do! Here is the link:

CNRUFC U12's Tour Fund 2024 - JustGiving

Could I ask you all please to donate if you are able and, more importantly, to pass the message on to friends, family & other contacts who may be willing to help. Every little helps even if only £10-20.

For those who may be up for a larger donation/sponsorship, we do have opportunities to put company logos on some of the kit we will be purchasing for the boys (playing shirts, hoodies and kit bags). Let us know if this is something you'd like to pursue.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Duncan & Adam
