Dear Lovely Villagers,

I wanted to give you a heads up that there will be a few little trick-or-treaters in the village this Halloween. I realise that Halloween is not everybody's cup of tea, so we will only be knocking on doors which have a pumpkin or similar outside.

Many thanks,
Kate

The chainsaw has been recovered. Our tree guys pulled over a Citroen Belingo which has apparently been driving around the village a few times. They had a lot of gardening gear in the boot.

BUT…..we have ran this through car checker and its clearly fake number plates as it has come up as a Vauxhall Vivaro!

We have notified the police ect

But please just be VERY carefull!!

> West Oxfordshire District Council is using a powerful new data tool to help residents receive the financial support they’re entitled to, helping hundreds of households boost their income, access vital services and avoid financial hardship.
>
> The Low-Income Family Tracker (LIFT), developed by Policy in Practice, was introduced by the Council in November 2024. The tool uses a mix of welfare policy analysis and council data to help identify households who may be missing out on support. The tool also helps the Council plan the right kind of support and monitor the impact to ensure it  is making meaningful difference.
>
> > Councillor Rachel Crouch, Executive Member for Stronger, Healthy Communities, said: "LIFT is already making a real difference for people in West Oxfordshire. By identifying where support is missing, we can act faster and smarter to help those most in need. It’s about using our data to make life better – helping households stay warm, fed and financially stable.
> >
> > “Too often, people in crisis don’t know where to turn or don’t realise they’re entitled to support. This tool helps us break down those barriers and reach people before that crisis escalates further."

> In its first campaign, the Council used LIFT to target and write to over 200 pensioners who were eligible for Pension Credit but had not claimed it. As a direct result, 68 residents successfully applied, unlocking £250,000 in financial support including regular payments, backdated income and winter fuel support.
>
> Following that success, the Council is now using LIFT more widely to promote access to other vital schemes such as Healthy Start, Free School Meals and the Warm Home Discount. These campaigns are designed to help families on lower incomes access extra money, improve their health and well-being, and reduce the risk of falling into debt.
>
> One campaign saw 3,500 households contacted about the Warm Home Discount, a one-off £150 payment towards energy bills. The results showed clear benefits: 114 households were able to clear debts, 81 moved out of a cash shortfall, and 57 households could now afford enough food. In total, many families saw an average increase of £86 in monthly take-home income.
>
> Through LIFT, the Council is also checking in with residents on Housing Benefit to ensure they receive full support, such as the Severe Disability Premium. In one case, this led to an underpayment of £1,000 being corrected and a long-term increase in income.
>
> The council will continue running LIFT campaigns throughout the year, using insights to tailor support, enable early intervention, and ensure households access the benefits they are entitled to, strengthening residents’ financial security. This includes working with AgeUK to boost Attendance Allowance uptake for pensioners with significant health conditions and partnering with Citizens Advice to improve financial literacy and provide guidance on reducing household expenses.

CRIME ALERT – SCAM TEXT CLAIMING TO BE FROM THE DEPARTMENT FOR WORK AND PENSIONS (DWP)

We’ve received reports of scam text messages claiming to be from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) about the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025–2026.

The message says you’re eligible for a payment of £200–£300 and instructs you to “apply” via a link before a stated deadline (e.g. 2 October 2025).

This message is a scam.

Scammers use urgency and pressure tactics – such as deadlines and warnings of missed payments – to trick people into clicking on fake links or sharing personal and financial information.

What You Should Do

Do NOT click on the link in the message.Do NOT share any personal or bank details — the real DWP will never ask you to apply or confirm details by text or email.Delete the message immediately.

How to Check Genuine Eligibility

You can check whether you’re eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment safely and directly through the official government website:

Winter Fuel Payment: Eligibility - GOV.UK

Crime Prevention Advice

Be suspicious of unexpected texts or emails offering money or benefits.Always check the website address (URL) — fake ones often include extra words, dashes, or unusual endings (like “.qpon” instead of “.gov.uk”).If in doubt, contact the DWP directly using the contact details listed on the official GOV.UK website.Report suspicious texts by forwarding them to 7726 (free of charge).

Stay alert and help protect others by spreading the word.

Remember: If it sounds urgent and too good to be true — it’s probably a scam.

Apologies for another message, but I did want to update you with the fantastic news that Zurich have agreed to price match the money we raised at the Autumn Fair. This elevates our total to a wonderful £6,549.90. The Friends of Great Rollright School aim to raise in excess of £10,000 per school year, so this gets this year’s fundraising off to an amazing start. Thanks again to all those who supported us, and of course to Zurich!

All best,
Kate and the Friends of Great Rollright School team X

Dear Lovely Villagers,

Thank you so much for coming out to support our Autumn Fair on Saturday 13th September. We were thrilled to see so many people there, supporting our school and having a great time - what a wonderful community we live in!

Local celebrity Kaleb Cooper got things off to a cracking start, hot on the heels of his National Television Awards success. He humbly told us he felt much more at home in Rollright than on the red carpet!

We'd had a lot of last minute changes thanks to the capricious British weather, so were busy sourcing extra marquees and dealing with cancellations like the bouncy castles and pony rides. However, the weather held beautifully for the first two hours of the fair, and the stalwart dogs of Rollright (and their owners) stood firm as the rain came over during the very last class. It was wonderful to see so many gorgeous and characterful dogs on display, and our thanks go to Darren Lake of Byron Dogs for judging.

Meanwhile, games were played, Hooky was drunk and the BBQ went down a storm, with a truly impressive spread provided by the WI for afters. Countless winners went home with wonderful raffle prizes, and we celebrated our winners of the Craft Competition and enjoyed the display made by all the children who entered.

With your help we raised £3,274.95, every penny of which will go to the school.

With thanks and good wishes,
Kate and the 'Friends of Great Rollright School' Team

The Great Rollright Fair is nearly here! The weather might be typically British, but don't worry - thanks to Banbury Marquee Hire and the generous folk at Charlbury Riverside Festival, we have two big marquees to keep us warm and dry if the rain does pay us a visit.

Even more exciting... the crew from Hook Norton Fire Station will be joining us in the afternoon (call-outs allowing!) and YES, they're bringing their FIRE ENGINE!

We can't wait - it's going to be a brilliant day for the whole community raising funds for our wonderful school. See you there!

All best,

Hello Lovely Villagers,

The Autumn Fair is fast approaching. Could you spare an hour to help out? We still have spaces on the BBQ, or if you are more creative you can try your hand at facepainting - we even have stencils to make it easier! There are some fun traditional games to ticket, like Hook-a-Duck and Splat-the-Rat, and our ever-popular Human Fruit Machine is back for another year.

Please send us an email if you can lend a hand: greatrollrightfriends@gmail.com

Otherwise we hope to see you at this wonderful community event, Saturday 13th September, 11am-3pm. We have a well-stocked bar and BBQ, Classic Car Show, Dog Show, market stalls, terrific tombolas, incredible raffle and much much more... For those that wish to see Kaleb Cooper, do please come for the opening at 11am, and if you want to show your four-legged friend, come and enrol from 11am onwards in good time for the first class at 12pm. And for everyone else - please do a little sun dance for us if you can!

Best wishes and sunny thoughts,
Kate and the 'Friends of Great Rollright School' Team X

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HIT A DEER

As we approach deer rutting season (September to November), the number of deer involved in vehicle collisions on our roads increases dramatically. If you find yourself in a collision with a deer, please take the following steps

1. Ensure your safety

Pull over to a safe location away from traffic and turn on your hazard lights.

2. Assess the situation

Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call for an ambulance immediately.

3. Call 999

Call the police on 999 to report the accident. They will handle the situation with the deer and can provide assistance if needed. Injured deer can be both unpredictable and volatile, and can cause further risk and harm to other road users.

4. Do not approach the deer

Injured deer can be dangerous, so avoid getting close to it/them.

For more information, please visit the British Deer Society website

We have noticed a large black cat visiting our garden (Old Forge Road) and hanging out with our cats. The cat isn’t misbehaving; relations between he/ she and our cats seem relatively harmonious. TOOL THEFTS

SECURITY ALERT: Rise in Tool Thefts from Sheds and Vans

There has been a noticeable increase in thefts from sheds and tradespeople’s vans in the local area. Thieves are targeting tools, power equipment, and valuable items—often causing significant financial loss and disruption to people's livelihoods.

These crimes often happen overnight, but some occur during the day, especially when vans are left unattended on job sites or driveways. Sheds, garages, and outbuildings are also common targets, particularly if they are poorly secured or out of sight.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR VAN:

Remove Tools Overnight: We understand that removing tools from your van overnight isn’t always convenient, especially after a long day or if you’re back on the road early the next morning. However, it remains one of the most effective ways to prevent theft. Wherever possible, take valuable tools out of your van at the end of each day. Store them indoors or in a secure, alarmed outbuilding.Install Additional Locks: Factory locks can be bypassed quickly. Install aftermarket deadlocks or slam locks on van doors for added protection.Use a Van Vault or Lockable Tool Chest: Secure tools inside the van with a heavy-duty internal storage unit that's bolted to the floor.Alarm and Immobiliser: Ensure your van has a working alarm system and immobiliser. Consider a GPS tracker so the vehicle can be located if stolen.Park Smart: When possible, park your van in a well-lit, secure area, preferably backed up against a wall or garage to restrict access to the rear doors.Display Signage: Stickers saying “No tools left in van overnight” may deter opportunist thieves.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SHED OR OUTBUILDING:

Reinforce Doors and Hinges: Fit strong hasp and staple locks with padlocks (ideally closed-shackle types). Use security screws or coach bolts for hinges to prevent tampering.Upgrade Your Locking System: Consider installing a shed alarm, motion-sensor lighting, or even a Wi-Fi-enabled camera to monitor the area.Anchor Tools and Machinery: Use chains and ground anchors to secure larger equipment or power tools within the shed or garage.Frosted Windows or Curtains: Keep tools out of sight by covering windows or installing opaque film.Keep Inventory and Mark Tools: Maintain a record of serial numbers, and mark your tools with your postcode or a unique identifier using UV pen, etching, or paint. This increases the chance of recovery if stolen.

It’s important to note that police are often unable to return stolen tools to their rightful owners unless the items are clearly marked or can be identified by a unique serial number. Unfortunately, when unmarked tools are recovered, they’re almost impossible to trace back to an individual, even if we strongly suspect they’ve been stolen.

We strongly encourage all tradespeople and residents to:

Record serial numbers of tools and equipment where possible.Mark tools with your postcode and initials using a UV pen, permanent marker, engraving tool, or forensic marking kits (like SmartWater or SelectaDNA).Photograph your tools as an additional reference for proof of ownership.

Taking these simple steps increases the chances of recovery and prosecution if your tools are stolen. It also helps the police return items to the rightful owner.

By taking these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft. Criminals tend to look for easy opportunities—visible tools, weak locks, and dark, isolated areas—so anything you do to increase difficulty and visibility can make a real difference.

NUMBER PLATE THEFTS

We’ve noticed a rise in number plate thefts across the local area. Thieves often steal plates to use them to commit other crimes, which means you could be wrongly blamed for offences such as parking fines or speeding tickets. This can cause a lot of hassle, as you’ll need to prove that you weren’t the one responsible.

To help protect your vehicle, please follow these tips:

Park in well-lit or busy areas whenever possible.Use anti-theft screws to secure your number plates.Check your plates regularly and report any thefts to the police straight away.Avoid leaving your vehicle unattended in isolated spots.

* Thames Water will implement a Temporary Use Ban (hosepipe ban) for the Thames Valley region which includes areas with a postcode starting with OX, GL, SN and RG4, RG8 and RG9
* The ban will come into operation on Tuesday 22 July 2025
* Following the driest spring in over a century and England’s warmest June on record, the Environment Agency has placed the Thames Area into the Prolonged Dry Weather category
* Thames Water’s drought plan is designed to mitigate the risk of further impact to water supplies and ensure the taps keep running for customers’ essential use while also protecting the environment

Thames Water today confirmed that a Temporary Use Ban (TUB ) will come into effect across a large part of the Thames Valley which includes areas with a postcode starting with OX, GL, SN and RG4, RG8 and RG9. The TUB will come into operation at 00.01 BST on Tuesday 22 July 2025.

After the driest spring in over a century and England’s warmest June on record, the Thames Valley area has been placed in Prolonged Dry Weather status by the Environment Agency, meaning there is a heightened risk of drought. Thames Water is now implementing the next stage of its drought plan  to help protect customer supplies and the environment.

Under a TUB customers are asked not to use hosepipes, including for cleaning cars, watering gardens or allotments, filling paddling pools and swimming pools or cleaning windows.

While the TUB does not impact businesses where water use is a core part of their purpose, for example garden centres/ car washes nor will it currently impact the London area, Thames Water is asking everyone across the region it serves to be mindful of their water use.

Context and source of water

The prolonged hot weather and below average rainfall means there is less water available to support local water supplies and Thames Water is continuing to see high demand across the Thames Valley region. Across the Swindon and Oxfordshire areas, the company has seen customers’ daily demand for water reach levels last seen during the 2022 drought.  Company data shows customers often use up to 30% more water on hot days (temperatures above 25 degrees).

Water abstracted from the River Thames for this area is stored at Farmoor reservoir in Oxfordshire. If as is expected, the warm, dry weather continues the company anticipates that reservoir levels at Farmoor will continue to drop.

Further, river levels are below average for the time of year, which limits how much water can be sourced from the River Thames to top up the reservoir. In the Cotswolds, aquifers which feed the River Thames are fast draining and the prolonged low rainfall also limits how quickly they can be refilled, further restricting how much water the company can source for reservoir storage.

The hot weather also means more water is lost through evaporation from surface water bodies such as rivers and lakes. Carefully managing the amount of water Thames Water takes from rivers can help protect aquatic animals and invertebrates as well as local wildlife.

Nevil Muncaster, Strategic Water Resources Director at Thames Water said: “This has been a challenging spring and summer with big spikes in customer demand during hot dry days and very little rainfall to replenish local supplies in the Thames Valley.

“Given the continued warm, dry weather we do not anticipate that the situation will improve any time soon so we have to take action now. Every drop of water we use comes from the environment and we have to balance protecting this while taking out the water needed to top-up reservoir levels.

“That is why we have had to make to the difficult decision to implement a hosepipe ban to make sure there’s enough water for customers’ essential needs and to protect rivers.

“While this TUB will only affect customers in certain areas, I want to thank all our customers for their understanding and for their support so far to reduce their water use. This includes turning the taps off while brushing teeth, taking shorter showers and letting your lawn go dry.”

Leakage performance and future resilience

Thames Water has already taken a number of measures to boost its water resources. This includes an extensive programme to reduce leaks.

Leakage is at its lowest ever level on the Thames Water network. The company is fixing 650 leaks a week with its engineers targeting leaks with the greatest impact to local water supplies.

Thames Water is also using innovative technology and data to find and fix leaks faster. So far it has installed almost 40,000 acoustic loggers on its water network to help detect leaks and expects to have 100,000 in place by mid-2027.

Thames Water is also looking ahead to secure future water supplies and is currently progressing plans for a proposed reservoir in Oxfordshire, which will be crucial in securing water supply for 15 million people across the South East, including Thames Water, Affinity Water and Southern Water customers. The company is also progressing plans for a vital drought resilience project in London which will be supported by water recycling.

URGENT - DOGS LEFT IN HOT CARS

With the ever increasing high temperatures, I'd like to raise urgent concern again about dogs being left in vehicles during hot days. Even with windows cracked, a car can become a death trap within minutes. Temperatures inside can soar to deadly levels, putting pets at serious risk of heat stroke or death.

If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, please call 999 immediately. Time is critical. Public awareness and quick response can save lives.

Let's all act responsibly to protect our pets from avoidable suffering this summer.

If anyone has 'lost' their blue bin - the dustmen have left one on the entrance to Davenport Close just off Old Forge Road.

A message from Alison Owen

I’ve just burst a tyre trying, unsuccessfully, to avoid a pothole on the way out of Great Rollright, relatively close to the junction with the A3400. A car was coming the other way so, even though I had slowed down, I couldn’t totally avoid the pothole.

As you know, cars no longer carry spare tyres so I drove to Southcombe Garage at a snail’s pace to avoid further damage. They don’t stock tyres but have ordered one for me and, very helpfully gave me a lift home.

I can’t help thinking how different the situation would have been had it happened at night! Through no fault of mine or my car’s, I would have been completely stranded in the pitch dark!

Has anyone got a small Amazon parcel addressed to Rosemary Harvey?

Alan passed this morning at 5.30am, with the sun shining on his face, as he loved.

The support we've had over the last 48 hours to bring him home in time, as he wanted, has been humbling and phenomenal. I'm so grateful.

Arrangements to follow later.

A cheeky reminder it’s our Pop-Up Cafe tomorrow, 10:00-12:30 at Great Rollright Village Hall.

I’m busy cooking up some lovely treats for you:
Raspberry and blueberry lime drizzle cake,
Banana cake with chocolate chunks, pecans and walnuts,
Traditional carrot cake with cream cheese frosting,
Children's choice tiffin, and they insisted it must have marshmallows on the top!
Plus chocolate cake and flapjack from two more village bakers, and pastries and donuts.

We will also of course have lashings of coffee and bacon rolls. Hope to see you there for a sunny start to Saturday!

All best, from Kate and the ‘Friends of Great Rollright School’ Team X

> We have received reports of cycles, motorbikes, and electric bikes being stolen from sheds and garages in the Chipping Norton area.

> High-quality bikes, including electric bikes and motorbikes, can be extremely expensive—often costing anywhere from several hundred to several thousand pounds. Premium models can exceed £5,000, making them a valuable target for thieves. Their high resale value and demand, especially for e-bikes, means it's more important than ever to take steps to protect them.
>
>
>
> Many of us have heard the phrase, “If they want to get in, they’ll get in.” While it’s true that determined criminals can sometimes bypass even good security, that doesn't mean we’re powerless. In fact, most thieves look for easy targets—unlocked sheds, poorly lit areas, or bikes left unsecured. By taking simple but effective steps like using high-quality locks, installing shed alarms, and anchoring bikes, you make it much harder for them and far more likely they’ll move on. Every added layer of protection is a deterrent—and it can make all the difference.

I’ve received several emails about this man, as below. It does seem that he is harmless and we shouldn’t be alarmed.

‘I think he was there today as I went running and he was wearing the same blue top.

I'm really pleased to hear that he is harmless and I have seen him and his Dad before and realised that he had learning difficulties.

I will pass that on to my daughter and we can all be relieved that it wasn't someone with bad intentions.’

and from Lynne Cantwell

I too know this man. He has learning disabilities and is harmless. His actions do appear threatening but he follows a regular route and his actions are ones of excitement.
He has been coming here regularly for approximately 4 years.

Just give him space and what little freedom he has in his life.
I too was alarmed the first time I met him but soon learned to accept his odd actions as part of his being.
Lynne
A message from Brenda Hayden

I know this man. I am sorry that this lady was distressed. He has severe learning difficulties and cannot speak. He is completely harmless and would have been distessed at this encounter. His Dad is usually nearby or in the car waiting while the son has a walk round which he enjoys.
Please pass this on to the lady and the village, as some understanding is required here
From a Great Rollright resident

Yesterday 25th June, at about 10.30am, my daughter was walking two dogs in the triangle field, as she approached the metal gate coming back towards the village she was chased by a man making grunting noises and strange hand gestures. As she walked faster the man walked faster so she started to run and he did the same as if trying to intercept her at the gate. She made it across the road and into the village safely. She was terrified by this man behaving so weirdly and felt very threatened. The hand and arm gestures could possibly have been interpreted as sexual gestures.

The man had dark short to medium length hair, medium build, about 6 ft tall and possibly in his 40s, wearing an electric blue long sleeved top and dark trousers.

Please phone 101 if you see anything suspicious or if you saw anything yesterday.

COURIER FRAUD CHIPPING NORTON

----------------------------------------

We want to make residents aware that there have been a couple of recent cases of courier fraud reported in the Chipping Norton area. In each instance, individuals were contacted by someone pretending to be from the police or a bank and were persuaded to hand over money.

While these incidents are rare, we’re encouraging everyone to stay vigilant. Genuine organisations will never ask you to withdraw cash, share your PIN, or hand over your bank cards.

Please take a moment to talk to friends, neighbours, and relatives — especially those who may be more vulnerable — to help spread awareness and prevent further incidents.

If you receive a call that doesn’t feel right, hang up and contact your bank or the police using a trusted number. The genuine number for your bank is on the reverse of your debit/credit card.

Courier Fraud: What It Is, How It Works, and How to Protect Yourself

Courier fraud is a cruel and deceptive form of scam that targets people by exploiting their trust and fear — often involving individuals posing as police officers or bank staff. Although it might seem unthinkable to fall for such a scheme, the tactics used are highly convincing and sophisticated. No one should feel ashamed if they’ve been affected — the fault lies squarely with the criminals who carry it out.

WHAT IS COURIER FRAUD?

Courier fraud is a type of scam in which a fraudster contacts someone, typically by phone, claiming to be from the police, a bank, or another trusted institution. They tell a compelling story — for example, that the person’s bank account has been compromised, or that counterfeit money is in circulation and the person's help is needed in an investigation.

The scammer then persuades the victim to cooperate in “catching the criminals” by withdrawing money, handing over their bank card, or buying high-value items. A "courier" is sent to the victim's home to collect the items, under the illusion that it’s part of a legitimate operation.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The process usually follows a set pattern:

Initial Contact: The scammer phones the victim, often pretending to be a police officer or bank official. They may even encourage the person to hang up and call back using 999 or their bank’s number — but keep the line open, so the call is intercepted.Building Trust: The scammer sounds calm, professional, and authoritative. They may quote fake case numbers, use real police station names, and even refer to supposed investigations into dishonest staff at the person’s bank. The ‘Sting’: The victim is asked to assist in the investigation. They might be told to withdraw cash for "inspection," give up their bank card and PIN, or purchase items like high-end watches or tech. A courier is then sent to collect these items. The Loss: Once the scammers have the money, card, or goods, they disappear. Often, the victim only realizes they've been scammed when it's too late.

WHO IS TARGETED?

While anyone can fall victim, this type of fraud disproportionately affects older individuals. Scammers often prey on those who live alone, may be less familiar with modern banking practices, or who simply have a strong instinct to be helpful and cooperative with authorities.

It’s important to approach this topic with compassion — people who are scammed are not foolish or careless. The fraudsters are highly manipulative and rehearsed, often working from detailed scripts and using psychological tricks to induce fear and urgency.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF AND OTHERS

Know the Signs:
* No police officer or bank will ever ask you to hand over money or bank cards.
* They will never send a courier to collect items from your home.
* They will never ask for your PIN.
Hang Up and Wait:
* If in doubt, hang up immediately.
* Wait a few minutes before calling back — ideally on a different phone, or ensure the line is properly cleared.
Talk to Someone:
* If you receive a suspicious call, speak to a trusted friend or family member before taking any action.
* Don’t be rushed — scammers create a false sense of urgency to stop you from thinking clearly.
Report It:
* Contact your bank immediately if you believe you’ve given away any financial details.
* Report the incident to Action Fraud (0300 123 2040 or online) and your local police.

> The government has been clear that some of the ‘Grey Belt’ – defined as "poor quality” areas of the Green Belt – in England should be developed to help deliver 1.5 million new homes over the next five years.
>
> This will be a big change for Oxfordshire.
>
> Rather than incrementally building around every town and village across the county, as is currently the case, Greater Oxford can ensure that high-quality, suitably dense and sustainable developments are built near to existing jobs and community facilities, with good public transport.
>
>
> BENEFITS TO GREATER OXFORD
>
>
> NEW HOMES
>
> Oxford is one of the least affordable places to live in the country. Average house prices are 13 times average salaries, and 3,500 households are on the waiting list for council homes. It’s little different in the villages around the city, where house prices are linked to the Oxford housing market and 100s of households also wait for affordable social housing.
>
> The city’s current administrative boundaries are tightly drawn around existing homes and businesses, meaning there is little space to deliver the number of homes needed.
>
> Greater Oxford would enable genuinely affordable homes, including new council homes, to be built at appropriate densities near to existing jobs and community facilities that have good public transport.
>
> It would also mean that Oxford could tackle the housing crisis without the need to build homes in neighboring authorities, giving the Northern Oxfordshire and Ridgeway councils full control of their own housing needs.
>
> The proposals would see over 40,000 new homes built within Greater Oxford by 2040.
>
> If the new council follows Oxford City Council’s current planning policies, 40% of these new homes – over 16,000 homes – would be required to be new council homes.
>
>
> ECONOMIC GROWTH
>
> Oxford has one of the fastest growing and most successful local economies in the UK.
>
> Oxford is a net contributor to the UK’s economy – generating £7.6bn annually – has been ranked on of country’s top performing cities by PwC, including attraction of overseas investment, for many years.
>
> The city has huge unmet demand for labs, innovation space, offices and hotels, but the current administrative boundaries – which are tightly drawn around existing homes and businesses – means Oxford’s economy is being artificially restricted.
>
> The Greater Oxford proposals would see the creation of 5.9m–9.6m sq ft of research and development space and 2.1m–3.2m sq ft of other commercial space. This would create between 17,900 and 29,100 new jobs in Greater Oxford, which would generate up to £2bn a year for the UK’s economy.
>
> The Greater Oxford proposals would also bring decision-making on apprenticeships and skills training back to the local level. The new council would look to increase apprenticeship and training opportunities in Greater Oxford, so local people have a proper share in the area’s growing success.
>
>
> TRANSPORT
>
> The transport system in the Greater Oxford region is in crisis.
>
> There is chronic congestion in and around Oxford, which is impacting the financial sustainability of the city’s bus companies.
>
> Greater Oxford would give local residents full control over Oxford’s transport for the first time in 50 years. The transport network has been run by Oxfordshire County Council since 1974.
>
> The proposals would provide additional bus services to villages around the city by extending existing routes.
>
> Having one council for Greater Oxford would also mean planning and transport could be properly integrated. Currently, the services are run by separate councils.
>
>
> ENVIRONMENT
>
> The Thames and Cherwell rivers and their tributaries flow through the heart of Greater Oxford, surrounded by vast green spaces and natural beauty. It is key that we protect and enhance these spaces.
>
> The creation of a Greater Oxford Council would strengthen the control that Oxford and the main population centres around it have over the Green Belt. We would work to strengthen protection for valuable green spaces, proposals that would help wildlife to flourish, enhance biodiversity, improve the quality of our air and water, and help mitigate the impacts of climate change.  This will build on the successes of the Zero Carbon Oxford Partnership, recently expanded to Oxfordshire, which came out of the pioneering Citizen’s Assembly on Climate Change.
>
> Our proposal would see the creation of a more resilient, more connected, network of nature and wildlife corridors, as well as continued support of the vital conservation and nature recovery initiatives – such as those in the Bernwood-Otmoor-Ray area at Bernwood Forest, the River Ray, and the Otmoor Basin.
>
> It would also facilitate wider ecosystem benefits, including flood regulation, nature recovery and carbon storage, which are essential in protecting our homes and environment from the increasing impacts of climate change.
>
> Green spaces are also just as important as urban spaces in fostering healthy communities and improving well-being. The Greater Oxford proposals would also give residents improved access to nature and the landscapes of our region, ensuring they can be enjoyed by everyone.
>
>
> COMMUNITIES
>
> At the moment, only city residents can take advantage of Oxford City Council’s community services offer, which includes:
>
> * Free swimming for under 17s in Oxford’s swimming pools – Barton Leisure Centre, Ferry Leisure Centre, Leys Pools and Leisure Centre, and Hinksey Outdoor Pool
> * Free youth clubs and activities, including summer holiday activities, as part of the Oxford Youth Ambition programme
> * Heavily discounted leisure centre membership for people on qualifying benefits, including those on carer’s allowance, foster carers and those on disability allowance
>
> Under the proposals, all Greater Oxford residents – including residents of Berinsfield, Botley, Kennington, Kidlington and Wheatley – will be able to take advantage of the offer.
>
> The aim would also be to extend the offer to Abbey Sports Centre in Berinsfield, Kidlington and Gosford Leisure Centre, and Park Sports Centre in Wheatley.
>
>
> NEXT STEPS
>
> Oxford City Council will carry out public engagement on its Greater Oxford proposals in June-July, including public events in Berinsfield, Botley, Kennington, Kidlington and Wheatley.
>
> Following the public engagement, Oxford City Council will draw up its final Greater Oxford proposals, which will be submitted to the Government in November.
>
> The final decision on local government reorganisation across England, including in Oxford and Oxfordshire, will be made by the Government in 2026.
>
> New councils are expected to be created in 2028.
>
> Oxford City Council carried out an initial survey on its proposals in February , which found 82% think the current two-tier local government arrangements could be improved, and 67% think councils should not be too large, so they can better meet the needs of local residents.
>
>
> COMMENT
>
> > “Oxford’s council services are currently split between Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council. This is confusing for residents and means decisions affecting the Greater Oxford area can be made by councillors from Chipping Norton or Henley.
> >
> > “Greater Oxford will bring local decisions under one roof and closer to the people they affect – helping us build more affordable homes, provide new bus connections, protect green spaces and enhance biodiversity, and create new, secure jobs for our children and grandchildren.
> >
> > “Our proposals will bring better services and help make Greater Oxford a fairer place to live, work and visit.”

> ABOUT US
>
> Oxford City Council is the democratically-elected local authority for Oxford.
>
> In partnership with others, we provide a wide range of services – including planning, housing, community centres, parks and waste collection – for approximately 152,000 residents, 106,000 people who work in Oxford and the millions of people who visit our world-famous city every year.
>
> We have set four key priorities, all of equal importance and all interconnected:
>
> * to enable an inclusive economy, where everyone has access to sustainable business and employment opportunities
> * to deliver more affordable housing, including a new generation of council homes to help meet our acute housing shortage
> * to support thriving communities, reducing the stark inequality between our city’s richest and poorest residents
> * to tackle the climate emergency by pursuing a zero-carbon Oxford
>
> Our vision is to build a world-class city for everyone.
>
> Oxfordshire has a two-tier system of local government, which means services are provided by two different councils. Oxford City Council provides local services for the city, while Oxfordshire County Council is responsible for strategic, countywide services such as roads, schools and social care.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to our Bike Meet at the weekend. Despite a last minute date change due to capricious weather, the event was so well attended, had a great atmosphere, and we raised more than ever before for our wonderful school! It was great to see so many people from both the village and school, as well as the brilliant bikers - almost as good as seeing the biker dog with it's own goggles!

Many thanks for all the support. Our next village event is the Pop-up Cafe on Saturday 28th June. We look forward to welcoming you with a good hot cuppa and a bacon roll or delicious cake. From Kate and the Friends of Great Rollright Team X

> Five councils launch two-unitary proposal for Oxfordshire and West Berkshire and seek residents’ views on how local government could be improved
>
> Download
>
> Change is coming to local government across England, and five councils are working together to propose two strong and locally accountable unitary authorities for Oxfordshire and West Berkshire.
>
> The government will replace the current two-tier system of local government, which consists of district and county councils, with new unitary authorities. It also wants smaller existing unitary councils, like West Berkshire, to reorganise so they cover areas of around 500,000 people.
>
> The government wishes for councils to work together on plans for how these new unitary councils will work. As a result, the majority of the Oxfordshire authorities have teamed up with West Berkshire to work together positively and constructively on a proposal that meets the government’s criteria and also provides an option for a better future for both Oxfordshire and West Berkshire. This proposal would deliver better services while retaining a close link to local communities.
>
> The proposal – which is one of three being put forward for the area – is for two new unitary councils with the working titles of Oxford and Shires Council and Ridgeway Council. It aims to create strong, financially stable councils that provide high-quality, cost-effective, and locally driven services.
>
> * Oxford and Shires Council would comprise all of the existing district areas of Cherwell, Oxford City and West Oxfordshire.
> * Ridgeway Council would be made up of the whole of West Berkshire Council’s area and all of the existing district areas of South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse.
>
> While the councils would be new, there would be strong continuity of services for residents, with the existing social care provision at West Berkshire Council and Oxfordshire County Council continuing as part of the new councils. This would ensure that those in need continue to receive their support without costly disaggregation of their services, which the government wants to avoid.
>
> Having two councils in Oxfordshire would mean the councils are large enough to meet the government’s size criteria and be financially viable, but small enough to be tailored to the needs of the individual areas they cover.
>
> The proposal will also focus on how the new councils can bring real economic benefits to the communities they serve, strengthening existing business partnerships and forging new ones in both urban and rural settings. The two-council model will also provide a suitable platform to address local priorities such as building the right homes in the right places, protecting the environment, improving roads and other infrastructure, and tackling issues like flooding and sewage pollution.
>
> The new unitary councils will be forward-looking, innovative and modern. They will have historical community connections at their heart and build on a strong sense of local identity that runs throughout the area.
>
> The councils will launch a comprehensive public engagement exercise from 4 June to 15 July to gather views that will help ensure the final proposals reflect the needs and aspirations of residents.
>
> Residents can share their thoughts by taking part in the online survey by visiting twocouncils.org
>
> They can also attend one of the engagement events held throughout Oxfordshire and West Berkshire. Details of these events are below. The councils will also start meeting with local stakeholders to let them feed into the proposal.
>
> Cllr David Hingley, Leader of Cherwell District Council, said: “As partner councils, we’re determined to seize this opportunity to shape the future of local government for the benefit of our communities. Our proposal for two new unitary councils will create authorities that are locally responsive and designed around what our places truly need. They will be answerable to their residents and underpinned by sound finances, positioning them to serve and empower future generations.
>
> “For Cherwell, this means building on our past successes and strong community relations to create a council that reflects local identities and priorities for the years ahead. To get this right, we want as many people in our district as possible to take part in this initial engagement exercise so they can influence our final proposals for the future of local government.”
>
> Cllr David Rouane, Leader of South Oxfordshire District Council, said: “When change is happening, it’s important for everyone to have a voice, which is why we’re inviting everyone to get in touch and let us know what’s important to them – this will help us develop our proposal based on real people’s experiences.
>
> “We’ve led the way in South Oxfordshire at providing innovative, high-performing and cost-effective services and we feel strongly that we should put that experience towards creating new councils that that really work for their communities, are local enough to be accountable and remain financially stable”
>
> Cllr Bethia Thomas, Leader of the Vale of White Horse District Council, said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity – change is coming to the way councils work and so we can’t let it pass without doing everything we can to make sure those changes work for our communities. The two councils we’re proposing aim to build councils that deliver high-quality services that are based on the needs of local people.
>
> “We believe that means basing the councils on existing communities and a shared history and sense of identity while also being forward-thinking and innovative. Residents, businesses and organisations in the Vale now have a chance to let us know what’s most important so we can develop a proposal that works for them.”
>
> Cllr Jeff Brooks, Leader of West Berkshire Council, said: “It’s important that we deliver the best option for our residents and there is a compelling case to be made for joining with our neighbours to the north. Whilst we think the argument for a new Ridgeway Council is a strong one - a council which is big enough to cope but small enough to care. It’s important to us that we understand what our communities think and I hope residents will look at what we are proposing and have their say.”
>
> Cllr Andy Graham, Leader of West Oxfordshire District Council, said, “We are clear that residents need to come first in any discussions around future options for local government. We want residents, businesses and other organisations to help us shape this proposal so it truly reflects our communities, both now and in the future.
>
> “This engagement will give people a direct route to influence this proposal and the shape of local government in future. We want to build on the obvious benefits of a two-unitary option to create something that is new, forward thinking and makes the most of this change in approach to deliver more for local people while protecting the services they currently value.”

> * This engagement is to help inform the proposal for two unitary councils covering all of Oxfordshire and West Berkshire – it is not a consultation on which of the three proposed options is preferred.
> * Names for the new councils would be decided by the councils themselves in the process of them being formed. The names being used are for engagement purposes as working titles

The BBQ & Bike Meet is back THIS Saturday at the Great Rollright Village Hall from 12-3:30pm!

Come and join us at the hall to marvel at an impressive gathering of motorbikes - from modern bikes to classic and vintage rides and everything in-between.

We'll be providing tea, coffee, cakes and a BBQ so do come along, have a snack, chat with pals and meet the bikers who are a lovely lot. Kids can have fun in the playground while you relax and enjoy the display.

We’d love you to join us, and if you own a bike, feel free to bring it along - there’ll be parking at the hall. Apologies for any noise caused, but it is just for a few hours and it's such a great chance to welcome some new faces to the village and do something different.

All proceeds raised go to our wonderful school.

We look forward to seeing you there!
Best wishes from the Friends of Great Rollright School

DON’T GET HOOKED: NEW WARNING URGES THE PUBLIC TO CONTINUE REPORTING PHISHY EMAILS AND TEXTS WITH 41 MILLION ALREADY REPORTED

----------------------------------------

Hello Everyone,

As of April 2025, the total number of phishing scams reported to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) reached over 41 million since its launch in April 2020. This has resulted in 217,000 scams being removed from across 393,395 websites pages by the National Cyber Security Centre.

Insight revealed by Action Fraud shows the top industries impersonated in reported phishing emails were streaming services, tech and telecommunication companies, with some posing as various UK government schemes.

Action Fraud, the national fraud and cyber crime reporting service, launched a phishing awareness campaign to urge the public to beware of phishing scams and report all emails and messages if they look suspicious.

Spam calls and suspicious text messages can be reported too. By using 7726, a free service offered by mobile network providers, customers can forward suspicious text messages, which helps the removal of scam websites and allows networks to block users sending scam text messages. Between April 2020 and April 2025, more than 27,000 scams were removed as a result of being reported using 7726.

Superintendent Amanda Wolf, Head of the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau at the City of London Police, said:

“We know it can be difficult to spot fake messages or tell if a call is genuine. Criminals can change tactics fast and use the technology available to constantly create genuine looking emails and messages or facilitate calls that feel authentic - all designed to trick us and try and steal personal and financial information.

“Every phishing email reported helps us gain a better understanding of the tactics being used and enables us to tackle it head on by identifying malicious URLs trending in phishing emails and texts - they can be taken down and disrupted, preventing further activity. The more reports received, the more people we can protect, preventing them from becoming victims.

“Don’t get caught out, Stop, Think Fraud, and make sure you report suspicious-looking emails or messages if you receive them. You can forward emails to report@phishing.gov.uk, or forward spam text messages to 7726.”

Sarah Lyons, NCSC Deputy Director for Economy and Society Resilience, said:

“Since 2020, over 41 million phishing attempts have been reported to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service — a powerful sign that the public is staying alert to online threats, helping to protect themselves and others.

“But cyber criminals aren’t giving up - they’re constantly finding new ways to trick people into clicking malicious links, sharing personal information, or handing over money.

“That’s why it’s more important than ever to stay alert. You’ll find clear, practical advice on how to spot and report scams - and how to stay secure online - on the NCSC website.”

What is phishing?

'Phishing', ‘quishing’ or ‘smishing’ is when criminals use fake emails, text messages, QR codes, or phone calls to trick victims.

The goal of a phishing message is to encourage the victim to click a malicious link, or scan a fraudulent QR code, which usually leads them to a genuine-looking website, designed to make victims part way with their financial and/or personal information. Criminals will use well-known brands or organisations the victim already has a connection with, like a bank or tradesperson, to make fake emails seem genuine and more convincing.

How can you protect yourself?

If you’ve received an email that doesn’t feel right, STOP!

break the contact – don’t reply, click on any links, call any phone numbers or make any payments check if it’s genuine: contact the organisation directly using an email address or phone number you know is correct, e.g. from your utility bills, via a search engine, on the back of your card or by calling 159  for banks before you delete the email, forward it to report@phishing.gov.uk

If you’ve received a text message that doesn’t feel right, STOP!

The great rise and fall of the smock-frock
In the first half of the 19th-century, most male villagers in Great Rollirght wore smocks for work, and even for church on Sunday. By the end of the 1800s, the smock had all but disappeared. What led to its popularity and then decline?

The BBQ & Bike Meet is back on Saturday 7th June, 12-3:30pm!

Come and join us at the Village Hall to marvel at a wonderful gathering of motorbikes - from modern bikes to classic and vintage rides and everything inbetween.

You don’t have to be a bike aficionado to enjoy the display as it is and impressive sight to see, and the bikers are such a friendly bunch. There’ll also be a delicious BBQ, cakes and refreshments to tempt your fancy, so why not drop by for a snack and a chat? We’d love you to join us. And if you own a bike, bring it along - there’s parking at the hall.

All proceeds raised go to our wonderful school.

We look forward to seeing you there!
Best wishes from the Friends of Great Rollright School

Is anyone missing a grey bin? There is one that has been abandoned at the entrance to Davenport Close on Old Forge Road. It has a small number '8' sticker on the lid.

It doesn’t belong to Alison Bartlett from Prader House - re previous Bulletin.
Alison and Gareth Bartlett in Prader House have lost their grey bin. Has it been returned to you by mistake? If so, please contact Alison - asbartlett@hotmail.co.uk

I ordered a new water butt which is much smaller than we need (it’s a 100litres).

If anyone would like this at no charge, please let me know. Its still boxed with stand and water diverter – so a complete kit.

Great Rollright Village Hall Committee Members

I am sure most of you at some time will have attended events at the village hall and will agree that it is a valuable asset. It is the only community facility in the village and as such warrants being protected for the future of the village. To keep it running and well managed there is a small team that meet monthly for about an hour.

2025 is an exciting year for the village hall as we have started working on how to improve the hall and expand what the hall can offer to the village residents and beyond. The work we do is rewarding, and we are looking foradditional committee membersto join the team to help with a range of activities plus the thinking that goes into the events across the year and the overall improvement of this great facility.

If you are living in the village, think you might like to help out and would like some further information about the work we are doing, please contact Trevor.

Thames Valley Alert Logo The Police Message Type Icon OUT ON PATROL

I am out patrolling the countryside as part of our operation Galileo, our operation that focuses on hare coursing offences.

Hare coursing is an illegal activity where dogs are used to chase, catch and kill hares. Not only are criminal offences taking place when this occurs but it is also used as a cover for more serious acquisitive crime offences in rural communities. There are also threats and intimidation towards the rural and isolated communities who challenge this behaviour.

Should you be suspicious that any crime is taking place, call the police on 999.

I will be the officer driving around in the big 4x4 police vehicle.

Let's crack down on crime together.

Best wishes

Bruce.

Dear Great Rollright ladies

Our next WI meeting has been pushed back for a week so as to avoid meeting on Easter Monday Bank Holiday. We will be meeting in the Village Hall on Monday 28th April and are looking forward to hearing more about the work of the ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World). This organisation is supported by the WI and we donate our old and surplus foreign coins and notes to this cause.

Our ACWW representative, Jane Finnerty, will tell us more about the work of this organisation which supports and promotes women’s wellbeing and rights worldwide, and particularly on their Rural Women’s Health Project.

Accompanying Jane will be fellow WI member, Magdalene Sacranie, author of a beautifully illustrated children’s book called ‘Tales from African Dreamtime’. Copies will be available at our meeting, priced £7.99. All proceeds will go to the ACWW.

All ladies are very welcome. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm. Visitors £3.

Despite Thursday’s plea for the idiotic air rifle behaviour to cease it is hugely frustrating and annoying to report another shot and dead bird in my garden this morning.
That is now one Blackbird, one Squirrel and one Pigeon.

This was a topic of conversation between villagers yesterday evening and it is known who is responsible. In fact, two teenagers with an air rifle have been spoken to and their excuse was “shooting vermin”. This is both invalid and not an excuse, especially on someone else’s property.

For the sake of village relations, if it is your child that is behaving this way will you please get them to stop. Immediately!

This is the final warning before getting the police involved.

“We have recently found a bird and squirrel in the same area of our garden that have both seemingly been shot, presumably by someone with an air rifle. Any shots could only have happened from a neighbouring property.
Should this happen again we will ask the police to investigate.”

It can be booked per hour and details on how to set it up will be provided at the time of booking.

To make a booking, please contact Jan Wilkinson (01608 730268) or Trevor Withell (07947 471894).

A huge THANK YOU to the great and good of Rollright and around, for coming to support our Pop-Up Café!

It was so lovely to see everyone and what a great atmosphere you all created. We are a friendly village, but so often wave hello as we busily rush about our business - it was wonderful to be able to stop and have a proper catch up.

I thought I'd over catered, but in the end we sold out of everything apart from three cookies, and that includes an emergency dash for more bacon!

Our focus for this event was very much on community, rather than fundraising, and we kept our prices sensible, but that said we still managed to raise over £500 thanks to your generosity.

Thanks to all those who baked, helped, cleared and came to support. Yet another reminder of what a wonderful community we have.

From Kate and the Friends of Great Rollright Team

We are so looking forward to welcoming you for a catch-up and a coffee in the Village Hall tomorrow, Saturday, 10-12:30!

Tea and coffee for grown-ups, hot chocolate and squash for little ones. Bacon rolls (from Beadles and Nash’s), pastries and homemade cakes and sweet treats. The forecast is looking fine, so the little ones can make the most of the playground giving grown-ups a chance to relax, plus there’ll be some colouring and a few games one end of the hall to keep them busy too.

What a great way to start the weekend! All proceeds go to Great Rollright School. Thanks as always for your support.

Do you miss those delicious bacon rolls and piping hot coffee we used to serve at the village market?... Come along to the Village Hall on Saturday 29th March, 10-12:30, and we will be serving up just that!

We are so lucky to live in this wonderful village and we wanted to create an opportunity to meet up and have a proper catch up over a cuppa. Enjoy freshly baked rolls from Nash's Bakery filled with bacon from Beadles, plus a selection of bakes and pastry for those with a sweeter tooth.

All profits raised will go to Great Rollright Primary School - so you are doing your bit for charity too. (Both cash and card payments accepted).

We really hope you can make it!
Kate and the Friends of Rollright Team Xx

Dear all,
France did England a big favour last weekend by beating Ireland and therefore potentially keeping the 6 Nations championship undecided until the final match this coming Saturday evening. Being 'Super Saturday' the last 3 matches of the championship all take place on the same day (Saturday 15th March) and they will all be screened in the village hall.

Kick-off times are as follows:
Italy vs. Ireland 14:15
Wales vs. England 16:45
France vs. Scotland 20:00

Doors open 30 minutes before kick-off and the usual provisions will be available. We look forward to seeing you there.

Mark, on behalf of Alan Monro & Bob Humphrey

Many thanks,
Mark.

The Village Hall has acquired a foldable table tennis table but it needs to be collected from Stratford upon Avon (30 mins away).
The table is approximately 1.6m by 1.6m by 0.6m

Does anybody have a van and an hour (ish) available to collect it? The village hall is prepared to cover any costs.

If you do, please contact Trevor before Wednesday. Thanks

Memories of Pat Francis from the Head of Great Rollright SchoolPat was the caretaker at Great Rollright school, alongside her husband Reg, for over 40 years. She was always keen to share fascinating stories of the school's history and was a font of all knowledge about the comings and goings in the village. Both Pat and Reg were fully involved in all aspects of school life - joining in with social celebrations, community events and educational fundraisers way beyond the remit of the job.

Pat held a very important role in the heart of our community and, even after her retirement, she continued to attend regularly as a sewing volunteer at the after-school club. Her endless patience and joy at being with the children made her weekly visits a highlight for us all.

When she finally finished her role as the school caretaker, the staff sang her out with a specially adapted version of 'Simply the Best' and this still stands as we reflect now on all she gave to the children and the adults who had the pleasure of spending time with her.

A message from Reg Francis

It’s with a heavy heart I tell you all that my wonderful wife Pat Francis passed away on the 19th February after a short illness.

Our family moved into the village 54 years ago where we raised our five children and enjoyed wonderful friendships with all the villagers of Great Rollright.

Pat, as you may remember, was a Caretaker and Dinner Lady at the local school for 40 years. She was also a local carer looking after many elderly villagers.

Fundraising was something Pat loved to do. She helped raise money for the maintenance of the churchyard and football kits for the village school by organising jumble sales and raffles at the village hall.

Pat will always be remembered for cycling around the village on her trusty bike.

We will all miss her very much

Six Nations Rugby Tournament 2025

In the Great Rollright Village Hall

After a break for Valentines the tournament kicks off again this weekend.

* Wales vs Ireland – can the new coach bring an air of respectability to Welsh Rugby or are we going to see a bloodbath?
* England produced a fine performance to beat France – I expect the whole village heard us cheering! Can they now go on and beat the Scots and regain the Calcutta Cup?
* France is smarting big time over their loss to the English – they have a point to prove and will be aiming to smash the Italians – anything less will not go down well!

This weekend the lineup is as follows:-

Sat 22/02/2024

14.15

Wales

Ireland

16.45

England

Scotland

Sun 23/02/2024

15.00

Italy

France

The usual provisions will be available – we look forward to seeing you all there.

Some money was found in Rollright today.
Not sure what the best approach is to see if we can find the owner but if someone can tell us how much and roughly where & when we would be happy to reunited.

Wondered if anyone would like this cat stand. If so, just a small donation to Save the Children would be welcome.

Thank you,

To all the villagers of Great Rollright
The Great Rollright Village Hall is one of the few community assets the village has, alongside St Andrew's Church and the fabulous village school. The team of trustees - still vacancies are available to those interested - want to improve and make better use of the hall; better events and improved facilities. Our goal is to provide a place where all the villagers can come to enjoyable events, make new friends and feel part of the community. The hall can also be booked throughout the year for personal celebrations at reduced cost for residents.
To help us decide what to improve, we decided to firstly canvass peoples’ views to enable us to plan the improvements accordingly. The hall is a registered charity and we want to re-invest the incomes we receive for the benefit of the hall’s users.
Would you please spend a few minutes completing the following questionnaire? The questions are designed to allow current users, and non-users of the hall, to provide comments that the can be used by the committee.Any suggestions for events or facility upgrades are warmly welcomed.
The questionnaire is an on-line tool (Google Forms) and you can access it via the following link:

Do we have a handy man in the village? I have a couple of simple things to be installed which call for a man (or woman) with a drill.

Six Nations Rugby Tournament 2025

In the Great Rollright Village Hall

This weekend the rugby six nations continues, before a break next weekend. Last weekend, France showed their quality in depth, thrashing the Welsh; Scotland eventually beat Ireland and the Irish, despite the new coaching setup, demonstrated their world class credentials by beating England (again).

Sat 08/02/2024
14.15. Italy. Wales
16.45. England. France

Sun 09/02/2024
15.00. Scotland. Ireland

It would be very helpful with the catering if you would get back to me in advance if you are going to join us – we look forward to seeing you there.

Has anyone any video footage from last night between 23:22 and 00:42?

Someone has spent over an hour trying to steal a car and when they couldn’t they have emptied everything from the vehicle (including the seats).

We have grainy footage of a dark 4x4 leaving the scene at 00:42 but would love if anyone else has anything that might be of use.

Looks like the vehicle headed up Forge Road towards the Green, but no idea which way it went from there.

Great Rollright Village Hall Trustees

I am sure most of you at some time will have attended events at the village hall and will agree that it is a valuable asset. It is the only community facility in the village and as such warrants being protected for the future of the village. To keep it running and well managed there is a small team of Trustees that meet monthly.

2025 is going to be an exciting year for the village hall as we have started working on how to improve the hall and expand what the hall can offer to the village residents and beyond. The work we do is rewarding, and we are now looking for2 additional trustees to join the team to help with a range of activities plus the thinking that goes into the events across the year and the overall improvement of this great facility.

If you are living in the village, think you might like to become a trustee and would like some further information about the work we are doing, please contact Trevor.

The Ladies’ Night planned for 18th January has been cancelled.
An evening with local resident Mike Napier - 'Confessions of an airline pilot.'
'Monday 20th January, doors open at 7pm, aim to start at 7.30pm.The WI are hosting Mike Napier - Confessions of an airline pilot.
Mike Napier spent 21 years as an airline pilot flying both long-haul routes across the globe and short-haul routes around Europe. This evening will be a light-hearted canter through all those questions that you have always wondered about as you sit in row 34 on your way to Mallorca, but never dared to ask. How many elephants does an aeroplane weigh? Who are the pilots, what do they do and why do they do it? What about the cabin crew – who are they? And what do passengers get up to? Why flying the simulator is not fun and why pilots don’t let the aeroplanes land themselves! Why turbulence and crosswinds are not frightening – they are just very irritating. And why when your flight gets delayed, do the pilots still make you board on time? Finally, some helpful top tips on where you should go on your summer hols.
Everyone is welcome to join us for Mike's talk and refreshments. The cost for visitors is £3.
So we can cater the refreshments please let us know you are coming along via email to:greatrollrightwi@oxfordshirewi.co.uk by 16th January.

I’m not sure if people are aware but there has been a fabulous mum and baby/toddler group running in the village hall on Tuesdays for a long time. The latest organiser (Jen Stobbart) cannot run it anymore and we have decided to try to keep it going on a rota so that it is less pressure for any one mum alone. Saying that, it still requires the laying out of a lot of toys from the back room, tables, washing up some Toddler plates after snack, sweeping up afterwards and packing all the toys away. This is difficult for Mums with small children (myself included – I have an 18 month old). We are really keen to keep the group going as it is extremely popular but I wanted to ask on the bulletin if there might be any local volunteers who could lend a hand to get toys out of the cupboard around 9:30 till 10 am on a Tuesday morning and / or pack them away again between 11:30 and 12?

Please contact me on 07888 651269.

News from West Oxford District Council

West Oxfordshire District Council News 12 Dec 2024

Council reaches out to households at risk of financial hardship to offer support

Council reaches out to households at risk of financial hardship to offer support Download In a drive to support at-risk households across West Oxfordshire, West Oxfordshire District Council has launched a project using the Low-Income Family Tracker (LIFT) to identify households eligible for vital financial assistance and encourage them to claim it. The initiative has already reached 233 households, urging eligible residents to apply for Pension Credit, which can unlock additional financial support.

LIFT is a data analytics tool that enables the Council to identify households at-risk of financial hardship that may not be claiming the support they are entitled to. By analysing both local authority and publicly available datasets, LIFT helps the Council target those most impacted by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis and the lingering effects of the pandemic.

Cllr Rachel Crouch, Executive Member for Stronger Healthy Communities, said, "We’re using LIFT to help us identify vulnerable households that might be unaware of the support available to them.

“The pandemic, followed by the rising cost of living, has created significant financial pressure for many, and recent changes to Winter Fuel Payment criteria have made it more important than ever for eligible residents to claim Pension Credit.

“LIFT has been an invaluable tool in helping us identify those residents who may otherwise be difficult to reach. However, we recognise that there may be more people who are entitled to support but aren’t included in our data. I urge anyone who thinks they or someone they know may be eligible for Pension Credit to check their eligibility and apply before 21 December.”

Recent changes to the Winter Fuel Payment criteria mean that only those in receipt of Pension Credit or certain other means-tested benefits will now qualify for the payment. However, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates that around 880,000 households are eligible for Pension Credit but are not currently claiming it. To address this, a national Pension Credit awareness drive was launched in August, encouraging eligible households to apply for Pension Credit by 21 December 2024, enabling them to receive backdated payments and qualify for this winter's fuel support.

The project is part of the Council’s wider work to support residents facing financial hardship and ensure they claim the support they are entitled to, including the continuing Household Support Fund. The next phase will focus on helping households make the most out of their income, with the Council to continue to use LIFT to identify residents eligible for other forms of financial support and reaching out to them to make them aware.

If you think you may be eligible for Pension Credit and have not been contacted by the Council, please check your eligibility at https://www.gov.uk/pension-credit/eligibility or call the pension credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 OR Age UK Oxfordshire on 0345 450 1276.

Please could we appeal to the householder in the bottom half of the Old Forge Road area, whose oil fired central heating system has, and is, causing a major problem for the rest of the residents is this part of the village - for about a month now, the air is full of foul smelling fumes, which even get into your home if you open a door or leave a window open. Please could who ever is responsible for this, get their system sorted, preferably sooner rather than later, as it is very unpleasant.

Thank you.

Just a reminder about this tomorrow. If you have any question about the Charities, do come along to see us.

On Friday, November 22nd, Gavin Southwell and I will be in the Village Hall to answer your questions and discuss any aspect of the Great Rollright Charities that you might be interested in.

This is not a formal meeting but just a drop in session. We want everyone in the village to know as much as possible about the Charity and the role it can play. We can give you information, take a grant application from you or discuss a possible grant.

Maybe, there’s someone in the village that you know of who could benefit from a grant - come and see us.

We’ll just be there for an hour, 6-7pm in the small committee room at the back.

Here’s a thought. The Village Bulletin is making it too easy for the couriers - it’s letting the company and the courier off the hook. Parcels go missing - I send out a Bulletin and we sort it amongst ourselves but it shouldn’t happen like that. Couriers don’t care where they drop parcels because the company doesn’t hold them accountable - the company probably doesn’t even know. What if, when a parcel goes missing, we inform the courier company and complain. If they kept receiving complaints, I think the company would soon take some action and make the couriers accountable for where parcels are dropped.

I’m still happy to send out the Bulletins but we could also complain to the courier company. At least they’d know the extent to which it happens. If we didn’t have the Bulletin, it would be really difficult to sort it amongst ourselves.
sorry - the last Bulletin dropped the poster.

Residents asked to become superheroes and rescue recyclable items from bins this Recycle Week

Residents asked to become superheroes and rescue recyclable items from bins this Recycle Week Download To tie in with the 'Rescue Me' theme for this year's Recycle Week (14 - 20 October) West Oxfordshire District Council is asking residents if they can save just one more recyclable item from their rubbish bins. Whether it’s an empty shampoo bottle that’s gone into the bathroom bin and is destined for general waste, or a foil takeaway container that no one wants to wash up, if everyone in the district saved just one more recyclable item a week from the rubbish bin it would add up to almost 6 million items over the course of a year.

West Oxfordshire’s recycling rates are among the best in the country and the Council currently sits at position 20 of 343 local authorities in the recycling league table for England, with residents sending most of their waste for reusing, recycling or composting. But recent analysis of waste bins in West Oxfordshire showed that 43% of their contents could have been recycled at the kerbside.

Giles Hughes, Chief Executive of West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “The analysis we recently carried out showed that recyclable items are still making up a considerable amount of the waste that goes into our rubbish bins. By weight, paper accounts for 9% of the average bin’s contents, card 4%, textiles 4% and metal 2.5%.

"However, the material most unnecessarily condemned to the rubbish bin is food waste, accounting for a massive 25% of the contents of the district's bins by weight. Just 11% of this is what we class as 'unavoidable' waste, such as peelings and eggshells, while the rest is wasted food, half of which is still in its original packaging. If this food was placed into caddies and left at the kerbside, it would be taken to the Severn Trent anaerobic digestion facility and used to generate electricity and produce bio-fertiliser to help grow more food.

“We all lead busy lives, and it can be hard to predict how much food we will need each week, but it’s important we all try not to waste food. It’s estimated that around 6-8% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced if we stopped throwing away food.

“The data is showing that although we are doing really well with our recycling in the district, we need to be recycling even more of the right things. This Recycle Week and beyond we encourage residents to rescue at least one more recyclable item from their bins, particularly food.”

Using recycled materials to make new products can use up to 95% less energy than making them from scratch and saves the damage caused to communities and land in the sourcing of new raw materials. While a comparatively small amount of metal goes into the district’s bins, steel cans and aluminium foil are endlessly recyclable with no loss of quality, which makes them an exceptionally valuable resource.

Now in its 21st year, Recycle Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of recycling and shines a light on the nation’s recycling habits.

To mark the week, Oxfordshire County Council is running a design activity and prize draw for residents. To take part, entrants need to design a recycling superhero character to rescue recyclable items from the rubbish bin. Fifty entrants will be selected at random to receive an ‘Oxfordshire Reuses’ aluminium water bottle and other waste reducing goodies. Entry forms can be picked up from any Oxfordshire Library or further details can be found at: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/environment-and-planning/waste-and-recycling/oxfordshire-recycles/recycle-week-2024

Householders who are unsure what they can put into their blue-lidded recycling bin can visit the Council’s webpages to find out more: https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/bins-and-recycling/what-to-put-in-your-bin/

For anything that can’t be recycled at the kerbside, the Oxfordshire Waste Wizard online tool signposts residents to the most sustainable way to reduce, reuse or recycle their unwanted items. Find the Waste Wizard: https://www.westoxon.gov.uk/wastewizard

Air quality in West Oxfordshire continues to improve

Air quality in West Oxfordshire continues to improve Download Air quality in West Oxfordshire has improved significantly since 2005 when Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) were declared for Witney and Chipping Norton. The nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in all monitored areas are now below the national objective levels and showing around a 50% reduction.

The Council has now approved a new Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) which sets out current and future measures to be put in place by West Oxfordshire District Council and our air quality partners, to further reduce NO2 and other damaging particulates to acceptable levels.

Lidia Arciszewska, Executive Member for Environment said, “It’s good news for communities to know that air quality is improving, but there is still more to do. We continue to be committed to reducing the exposure of residents to poor air quality.

“We will soon publish our new AQAP that sets out plans to improve access to walking, cycling and public transport in Witney and Chipping Norton, where NO2 concentrations have been historically high. These interventions will help to maintain acceptable NO2 levels and improve health in our communities.

“We are also investigating installing fine particulate matter sensors in known hotspots in the district to monitor other damaging particles in the air. These sensors will detect pollutants that are smaller than a red blood cell and will enable us to consider how we could further improve our air quality which will ultimately help improve people’s health.”

Air pollution is associated with several adverse health impacts. It is recognised as a contributing factor in the onset of heart disease and cancer. Additionally, air pollution particularly affects the most vulnerable in society: children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions. There is also often a strong correlation with equality issues because areas with poor air quality are also often the less affluent areas.

Fine particulate matter is becoming increasingly associated with respiratory and cardiovascular health conditions as well as other heath conditions such as cancer and dementia. Monitoring these particulates will enable the council to identify any areas of concern and then plan to improve them.

The high levels of NO2 recorded in 2005 were attributed to similar issues in both Witney and Chipping Norton, namely traffic congestion and ‘street canyons’, where continuous buildings either side of a road trap air pollutants causing them to build up.

The Covid pandemic saw concentrations of NO2 fall significantly across the UK, following the sharp decrease in vehicle usage. Since the removal of all restrictions towards the end of 2021, there has been a slight increase in NO2 concentrations across the district, but these have never returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Predictions based on raw 2024 data collected to date, suggests the annual average NO2 concentration for the current year will be lower than 2023, continuing the trend of improvement. If this is proven to be the case, it is likely Defra will expect to revoke the AQMAs in 2025 or 2026. Revocation of an AQMA is expected when concentrations of NO2 have been at acceptable levels for three consecutive years.

The continuing downward trend in NO2 concentrations we are seeing across the district, is thought to be due to a combination of factors, including the continuing popularity of working from home and an increase in uptake of low emission and ultra-low emission vehicles.

It turned out to be lovely, so I repeated what I did last year and had done with Lucia in the past - walk twice round the village via the church and the fair. Sponsorships will be welcome, either to me or to one of the Churchwardens (Gavin Southwell and Mike Napier). Many thanks. Half the money goes to the Oxford Historic Churches Trust and half through the Trust to St.Andrew’s Church.

Second-hand clothing is back in fashion this September

Second-hand clothing is back in fashion this September Download A national campaign encouraging people to shop for clothing second-hand and to donate anything they no longer wear is being supported by West Oxfordshire District Council this month.

Second Hand September highlights the environmental damage caused by textile production - a highly intensive process which often relies on pesticides, toxic chemicals and vast amounts of water.

In the UK approximately 350,000 tonnes of clothing is binned each year rather than being passed on or recycled, wasting valuable resources and further adding to the negative impact that textiles have on the environment.

This Second Hand September, the Council is joining others to encourage people to shop second-hand where possible and make sure old clothing is reused or recycled.

If anyone has clothes that aren’t good enough to pass on, the message is not to put them in the rubbish bin. Clothing, shoes, slippers, blankets, towels, bedsheets and curtains can all be recycled at the kerbside. Residents simply need to leave them out for collection next to their recycling wheelie bin in a tied carrier bag to keep them dry.

All of Oxfordshire’s Household Recycling Centres also accept textiles, and there are charity recycling banks for clothing and textiles in the district. Nearly all textiles can be reused, either being repurposed as clothing or as secondary raw materials for the car, building and textile industries.

Lidia Arciszewska, Executive Member for Environment at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “Second Hand September is a great reminder of the ways we can enjoy fashion without it having a huge negative cost to our planet, for example by buying second-hand or swapping clothes with friends.

“The good news is that two-thirds of people in the UK say they have bought second-hand clothing and the vintage market is booming, particularly among young people. By 2032, it’s predicted that sales in the second-hand clothing market could overtake those of fast fashion.

“We hope that lots of people will be inspired to think second-hand this September and beyond.”

Climate Action Oxfordshire is a partnership between Oxfordshire County Council and the five district authorities, including West Oxfordshire District Council.

The Climate Action Oxfordshire website (www.climateactionoxfordshire.org.uk ) contains guides on shopping more sustainably, looking after clothes so they last longer and how to buy the best quality second-hand clothes.

Throughout the month, West Oxfordshire District Council will be sharing information on its social media channels and highlighting the work of repair cafes in the district, many of which have volunteers available to fix broken zips and carry out other clothing repairs and alterations to give clothing a new lease of life in return for a small donation.

The Second Hand September awareness month was initiated by Oxfam in 2019.

Neighbourhood Alert Logo The Police Message Type Icon THEFT OF MOTOR VEHCLES
We are continuing to have instances of cars being stolen from just outside houses, this normally involves keyless cars and normally happens overnight however in some cases this has happened in the middle of the day when no-one expects it.
There is an easy way to protect against this theft and it involves getting a storage pouch/box for your keys which blocks the signal being stolen, the thieves steal your keys signal from outside your house and then use the signal to steal your car. They will also de-activate any tracking signals from the vehicles as they are very organised and professionals who know what they are doing.
We are advising people to purchase a RFID key fob pouch or box as it is a simple thing that can stop the theft of your keyless car. If you want to know more please use the link below. Executive Back on Tour in Chipping Norton

Executive Back on Tour in Chipping Norton Download West Oxfordshire District Council’s Executive is on tour again next month as they take their 11 September Executive meeting to the Upper Hall at the Town Hall in Chipping Norton

Executive meetings, where key council decisions are made, will continue to tour across the district in 2024 to make it easier for people to take part in local democracy and have their say.

Executive on Tour has been improved for this year with more opportunities added for residents to work directly with the council leadership on locally important topics. These sessions will be run by specialists from the council and will ask residents to help input into key decisions. At Chipping Norton the topic of this engagement will Local Markets.

Councillor Andy Graham, Leader of the Council said, “We are really pleased with the response following our previous Executive on Tour meetings which saw good attendance and it was fantastic to see people coming to our meetings who don’t usually attend.

“We want the council decision making process to be open, transparent, and easy for local people to get involved with.

“We are trialling different times for our meetings in future, which we hope will make it easier for working people to become involved.

“I encourage local people to come along, and we look forward to talking to people about what matters to them.

The new engagement sessions we have added this year will enable us to work directly with residents on key projects. For our Chipping Norton meeting, we’ll be discussing our local markets, general economic development, and how we can invest and support our markets and their valuable contribution to local communities. So why not pop along and take part? Remember, this is your Council.”

The meetings will be held in towns across the district over the coming months with details to be published on the Council’s website as venues are confirmed closer to each meeting. The details for September's meeting are:

* 11 September 2024, Chipping Norton Town Hall, 2.30pm

This meeting’s Engagement Session will be Local Markets in West Oxfordshire and the session will start at 3.30pm

All meetings will be open for residents to attend without pre-booking. After the meeting, everyone is welcome to chat to our Executive members directly.

Each meeting has a standing agenda item for public participation, where residents can raise topics important to them. Members of the public wishing to ask a question at the meetings must notify the Council by emailing democratic.services@westoxon.gov.uk by 2.00pm on the Friday directly before the meeting. More information is available on the Council's website.

Residents' views sought on open air markets

Residents, businesses, and stall holders in West Oxfordshire are invited to help shape the open-air markets in Chipping Norton and Witney to increase footfall, boost prosperity and enhance the visitor experience.

Cllr Duncan Enright, Deputy Leader of the Council and Executive Member for Economic Development, said:

“Our markets are what make our towns special: the clue is in the ‘market towns’ name. We value our existing stallholders very highly and want to support them and new traders to make the markets bigger, better and more successful.

“We have a real opportunity to improve the experience and perception of our markets for residents and visitors. With funding from the Government, we can invest in our open markets and improve the town centre’s retail and service sector.

“Our aim is to commission a commercial market operator to run the weekly retail markets in Witney and Chipping Norton to drive forward improvements to both markets. But we need first to understand the public’s perception of the current markets in the two locations and what they believe will make the make the markets the best they can be. I urge everyone to get involved in our short survey on the markets; only then can we start to implement the improvements you want to see.

"We know that residents value special events like the Christmas Market in Witney last year, and this was reflected in the footfall figures. Our mission is to create a programme of themed markets at Marriotts Walk that complements the offerings of the retail markets, providing residents with a diverse and vibrant shopping experience. This is a collaborative process and so working together with town partnerships and existing stallholders will be crucial to achieving a shared vision.”

The vision for West Oxfordshire, as laid out in the 2023-2027 Council plan, is to build a district with thriving local economies and vibrant town centres. The Council recognises the crucial role its outdoor markets play in this and hopes that by improving its markets and attracting more visitors, it will boost financial growth for town centres, create more job opportunities, and ensure stronger, happier communities.

To take part in the survey please go to https://yourvoice.westoxon.gov.uk/en-GB/projects/west-oxfordshire-markets. Your responses will help us understand how we can better serve the community and make the markets an even more enjoyable place to visit.

A message from Alan Wiley

I would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of condolence and offers of help following my recent loss of Roz. Be assured, if I need help in any way, I will follow up on all of your kind offers.

Alan
It is with great sadness that I’m writing to advice that Roz Wiley has passed away. She was transferred to Sobell House Hospice yesterday and passed away this morning.

Roz fought her cancer diagnosis with enormous courage and stoicism but in the end it overwhelmed her.

Alan needs our support now.

There is a man going around knocking on doors and flashing a badge with the word “police” on it. He’s claiming there’s been a burglary nearby and he wants to sell you a burglar alarm. If he comes to your door do not let him in, do not buy from him,

Governor Vacancy - Great Rollright CE Primary School

We are looking for Governors to join our team. We have particular need for a Governor who will oversee the premises and buildings of the school, but any interest is welcomed Governors oversee the workings of the school, no one governor is expected to know it all! The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out duties amongst its members and be able to take decisions as a group. We need self-motivated, determined and enthusiastic individuals who are willing to learn. The rest will be learnt through the full induction and training we offer to help build your understanding and support your development as a governor.

We currently meet 6 times per year. For more information, or if you have any questions at all, please contact Helen Hare (Chair of Governors) on hhar0292@great-rollright.oxon.sch.uk

We are sure that the serial numbers we have been using for the Bulletins are not of interest to anyone except Trevor - so they are gone for good…..
Monday at 7pm at the Village Hall is the A.G.M. of the Trustees of Rollright Village Hall, this will be followed by the A.G.M. of the Parish Council at approximately 7.30pm.

All residents are very welcome to attend both to hear about last year’s events/progress and to learn about the latest developments.

Hopefully both our County and District Councillors will be in attendance.

On behalf of Kath Hales’ sons (her “boys”) and her wider family.

We would just like to thank all those that attended mum’s funeral on Tuesday 7th May. Mum would have been so pleased with the service at St Andrews and delighted, if not very surprised, to see so many make the effort to pay their respects. As her family, it was wonderful to see the church so full and to meet many of you after, finally putting faces to the names she has so often and so warmly spoken about.

As a family we take comfort from the many friends mum made over her 32 years living in Great Rollright and we thank you for the many cards, notes and messages we have received recently.

Finally, to those that donated at the church, a special thank you. Mum had a special place in her heart for both St Andrews and the village school and was keen that this money be split between them, and we will ensure that this is arranged in the coming weeks.

Thank you all for your support and kindness.

Graham, Chris and Phil Hales.
The Plight of Tenant Farmer William Fletcher

The impact of the great depression in British agriculture in the 1870s and 1880s has all but been forgotten. It impacted our whole society: the population of Great Rollright declined by 30%! It destroyed many livelihoods.

The tenant farmers, like William Fletcher – shepherd Richard Widdows' employer – were particularly affected.

William Fletcher was a tenant of Brasenose College and lived in Manor Court Farm in Tyte End in Great Rollright.

Read more here: https://shepherdstone.substack.com/p/the-plight-of-william-fletcher-181886

Kath’s funeral will take place at 10.30, next Tuesday 7th May at St. Andrew’s Church Great Rollright.

Everyone is welcome and also to then attend a short service at North Oxfordshire Crematorium and Memorial Park in Tackley, near Kidlington (OX5 3EP)

At 12.30 the family will gather at the Cotswold Hotel, Spa & Golf Course, Southcombe, Chipping Norton (OX7 5QH) Again everyone is welcome to come to remember Kath and support the family.

Family flowers are preferred, however, donations in lieu will be gratefully received and will be equally divided, going to Great Rollright School and the Village Hall, both places which held a special place in Kath’s heart.
Yet again, the large rubbish bin at the village hall has been used (by persons unknown) to almost fill it with their own black bin bags.

It is for use of the village hall users ONLY.
There is a mystery car parked: in Tyte End, almost outside Tyte Tap House.

It is half on the pavement and has been there for many weeks now.

It is a black Nissan QashQai +2 registration YF11BFL. The police have run the number on their computer and it is “not of interest to them”. It appears to be taxed until April 2025 with MOT until Sept 2024.

A bit of a mystery. Does anyone knows whose it is and why it has been parked in Tyte End for weeks?

Photographic Enterprise - Frank Packer 🎞️📸

We only know what shepherd Richard Widdows looked like because of Chipping Norton photographers Frank Packer and Percy Simms. Frank Packer and his family ran an enterprising photographic business from the early 1900s until the 1970s. Read the fascinating story of their lives. The highlight is the wonderful selection of photos from the Packer Collection in the Oxford History Centre’s archives.

Hello from Great Rollright WI!

Following our AGM on Monday we are delighted that Martene, Heather K, Irene and Marilina have agree to continue as the committee to keep our vibrant WI going.

Once the 'official' business was closed we heard about a former village resident Mary Cherry - who grew up in Barford St Michael and went onto to become one of the worlds most trusted female agricultural journalists and the first female president of Oxfam. Mary settled in Cotswold Corner in Great Rollright in her final years and became good friends with many in the village. We know of only 2 copies of her book locally 'So I kept going' which we are all now eager to read so we will need to pass it round and share. (We cannot find it via the internet yet)

We are looking to grow our WI membership with those women who live locally plus their family and friends so whether you’re passionate about community service, learning, or simply connecting with other women, the WI provides a supportive and empowering environment!

Our programme for 2024 is attached, we welcome visitors to our meetings so please come along if you see a topic you like!

We meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7.30pm in the village hall. Doors open from 7pm. Sandwiches, cake and refreshments included.

Visitor fee is £2 per meeting. (The fee may vary if a craft event)

Come and join us !

Lamb-tail pie and other farmhouse fare 🥧 🐏

This week's A Shepherd's Stone Substack post is inspired by a copy of Farmhouse Fare that Brenda Hayden discovered in a drawer in her farmhouse in Great Rollright. It focuses on what farmers and agricultural workers would have eaten in the 19th century. It also features a recipe for Lamb-Tail Pie!

With thanks to Brenda.

Super Saturday March 16 In the Village Hall.

Well, after a fantastic weekend of rugby last weekend, we are now reaching the end of the tournament – three matches on one day!

If you didn’t watch here are the answers to the questions we posed last week:-

Yes – Italy did beat Scotland (in Rome), winning 31 to 29

Yes – England did beat Ireland (at Twickenham), 23 to 22

No – Wales did not manage to beat the French, losing 24 to 45, even with the home advantage.

Super Saturday Schedule

14.15 - Wales vs Italy

16.45 – Ireland vs Scotland

20.00 – France vs England

By popular demand we once again have the steak and ale pasties from Hook Norton brewery and our usual range of liquid refreshments.

Being our last weekend we will not have surplus F&B, so to be sure, if you want to ‘partake’, please let us know you are coming.

See you Saturday, we hope.

The Great Rollright Historian: Reginald Welbury Jeffery

📚

This morning’s A Shepherd’s Stone post is another tragic tale!

It is about Jeffery and his wife Ursula and daughter Honor, who lived in Church End House. Jeffery was the author of the first history of the village. They are buried in St Andrew’s churchyard.

With thanks to Carol Dingle whose book inspired this post. She also supplied the wonderful photos that Brasenose didn’t know they had!

Sat Mar 9th

14.15h - Italy vs Scotland

16.45 - England vs Ireland

Sun Mar 10th

15.00h - Wales vs France

Each match has an intriguing agenda:-

Can Italy, who nearly beat France humble the mighty Scots, who have just humbled England?

Can England restore some pride in English rugby by beating the rampaging Irish?

Can Wales get their first win of the series and compound the woes of the French?

Please let us know if you're going to come

Lambing the 19th-century way. Spring time in Great Rollright! 🐑🌼

Today's A Shepherd’s Stone blog post was a great excuse to visit the Cotswold Farm Park and to walk up the road and look at our local lambs.

Does anyone know if the sheep up by The Triangle are Oxford Down?

The history only came together with the help of the Oxford Down Sheep Breeders’ Association.

Just wanted to pass on this warning re a scam – I just got a pleasant, authentic sounding call from ‘Visa’ saying a £900 transaction for on line shopping was in process and press 1 for…. And 2 for ….’

Hi all

As the U12's Head Coach at Chipping Norton Rugby Club, I and Adam Buxton are organising a rugby tour for around 18 of our boys this Spring. We will be joining the Tigers Challenge event at Minehead over the May Bank Holiday. This will be the boys' very first tour (having been together since the age of 6) and we want to make it special and memorable. But we also want to enable some of our group to join the tour for whom the cost of travel and accommodation may be prohibitive. Four boys currently living in Rollright will be going (Finlay Midwood, Percy Buxton and Harry and Freddie Longsdon).

We would like to appeal to your generosity and/or networks to help us raise the money we need to make the tour happen in the way we want to.

Adam and I are deep into planning at the moment and have already done quite a bit behind the scenes - including starting the fundraising journey!

We have created a JustGiving page and have already raised an impressive £2,841. But we want to raise a total of £5,000 if we can to make sure we can give those who are going a tour to remember and, if we get close to this target, a benefit that rolls out to the wider club. The more we raise, the more we can do! Here is the link:

CNRUFC U12's Tour Fund 2024 - JustGiving

Could I ask you all please to donate if you are able and, more importantly, to pass the message on to friends, family & other contacts who may be willing to help. Every little helps even if only £10-20.

For those who may be up for a larger donation/sponsorship, we do have opportunities to put company logos on some of the kit we will be purchasing for the boys (playing shirts, hoodies and kit bags). Let us know if this is something you'd like to pursue.

Thanks so much in advance for your help.

Duncan & Adam
